MANCHESTER - There wasn't anything special about the play call for Jennifer Schlim, but it just happened to come at the biggest moment.

With the top-seeded Coe-Brown Academy girls basketball team clinging to a two-point lead over No. 6 Goffstown in the final seconds Saturday in the Division II championship game at Southern New Hampshire University, Schlim stepped up and made a block on a shot by Molly Mcqueeney that would have tied the game.

Haley Ruth ended up with the ball, and after getting fouled, made two free throws to help the Bears (22-0) clinch a 50-46 victory and an undefeated season.

"It was our regular basketline defense," Schlim said. "It was my job, because my player was on the other side, I was supposed to be basketline, and I jumped over and happened to get a block. After it happened, it was a great feeling, but it was a normal, defensive play that I usually do."

On a night when Sarah Curtin (17 points) and Abigail Ahern (14 points) led the offense, Schlim stepped on defense, teaming up with Sydney Fisher to hold Goffstown's Kathryn Howe to nine points. Rene Roggenbuck led the Grizzlies (16-6) with 12 points and 20 rebounds, but did most of her damage in the first half before Coe-Brown made adjustments.

"She's tough underneath and she's tough matchup for anybody," Coe-Brown coach Joe Vachon said. "We started to front her more in the second half and it worked. The big thing was shutting down the Howe girl and making everyone else beat us."

And everyone else almost did, as all five Goffstown starters had at least six points. Molly Mcqueeney had eight points for the Grizzlies, while Hannah Larochelle added seven and Sarah Doherty had six.

"We knew there was going to be a lot of attention to (Howe)," Goffstown coach Deanna Goodwin said. "She did a great job on the defensive end and she dug in and made sure she got rebounds. She still played a heck of a game. Everyone else was able to support her."

The teams were tied at 9 at the end of the first quarter and 22 going into halftime before the scoring picked up in the third.

Goffstown took a 30-28 lead on Howe's only 3-pointer of the game with 4:52 left in the quarter, but Curtin answered right away with a 3 of her own. After a Grizzlies turnover, Deborah Peabody hit a 3 to put Coe-Brown up 34-30, but two free throws by Howe and a 3 by Mcqueeney put Goffstown back in front, 35-34.

Ruth and Curtin hit back-to-back 3s to give the Bears a five-point lead, and after a layup by Larochelle and two free throws from Mcqueeney, Fisher converted a three-point play to put Coe-Brown up 43-39 going into the fourth quarter.

"The third quarter was great," Vachon said. "(Curtin) had a tough first half. I told her in the locker room, don't you stop shooting. If you stop shooting, you'll come out. She just hit them."

Curtin had three of the seven 3-pointers made in the third quarter for nine of her 17 points, and she finished the game 5 of 11 from behind the arc.

"I was really excited, feeding off the energy from the crowd," she said. "(Vachon) definitely instills a lot of confidence in me and tells me never to doubt myself, so that's nice to have from a coach."

Curtin hit another 3 early in the fourth and Coe-Brown led by five, 48-43, with 2:14 left in the game, but the Bears turned the ball over three times in the final two minutes, including with 19.2 seconds left and Goffstown down two.

"The problem with being an uptempo team sometimes is that it can hurt you at the end," Vachon said. "You're trying to make something happen, trying to move the ball."

The Grizzlies took a timeout and Vachon expected them to try to get the ball to Howe. Instead, Mcqueeney got open near the left elbow and drove the lane. Schlim got over in time to help out and came up with the block.

"I think a little bit was experience," Goodwin said of the final play. "Our kids played a heck of a game and they gave everything they had. In the last minute, we had a shot at it, which is everything you can ask for. If it falls it falls, if not ... we got blocked on it and that's fine. We stuck to the game plan and everybody played the best they can."
