PEMBROKE – There are more than 17,000 high school baseball teams in the country.

None of them have put together a winning streak like Portsmouth.

The Clippers scored five runs in the second inning and got a solid pitching performance from Rick Holt to defeat Pembroke Academy 10-2 on Thursday.

The win was the 76th in a row for Portsmouth, setting the national high school record for consecutive wins, breaking the previous record of 75 set by Homer (Mich.) in 2004-05.

“It leaves you at a loss for words,” Portsmouth coach Tim Hopley said. “I did a quick check last night on MaxPreps, and there’s something like 17,421 high schools that play baseball in the U.S. There’s nobody who is above them as far as what they accomplished (Thursday).”

And what the players before them have accomplished, as the streak dates back to the start of the 2008 season. During that time, the Clippers have won three straight Class I tournaments, and are now 13-0 in their quest for a fourth title, this time in the renamed Division II.

While Portsmouth still has three games left in the regular season, starting with Monday’s game at St. Thomas, but Hopley isn’t too worried about the team’s focus now that they’ve reached this milestone.

“When I came out to them, they seemed pretty happy that it was over and behind them, and that’s great because now we need to change our focus to St. Thomas on Monday,” he said.

The Clippers got all the runs they would need Thursday in the second inning. Matt Feeney led off with a single off Pembroke starter Patrick Jarvis and Holt walked. After a fly out by Keegan Taylor, Conor Trefethen reached on an error to load the bases.

Matt Main, Portsmouth’s No. 9 hitter, slapped a double down the third base line to score Feeney and Holt. Trefethen came home on a passed ball to make it 3-0 and Bill Hartmann and Connor McCauley hit back-to-back RBI singles to give the Clippers a 5-0 lead.

Portsmouth got a run in the fourth to make it 6-0, but Pembroke finally broke through in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Derek Daniels got the Spartans their first hit of the game and Matt Gosselin followed with an infield single. Daniels was erased at third on a fielder’s choice for the second out, but Pat Flanagan crushed a two-run double to center to score Gosselin and Zak Gauss to make it 6-2.

But the Clippers responded in the top of the fifth, scoring three more, and Portsmouth added another run in the sixth to make it 10-2.

Holt, who retired the first 10 batters of the game, sat down the last seven Spartans in order and finished with a complete game, striking out four and allowing five hits.

McCauley was 4-for-4 on the day with three RBIs and Main was 2-for-2 and also drove in three runs.

Jarvis suffered the loss, going two-plus innings and allowing four earned runs. Shane St. Onge pitched the final five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and three walks.
