NASHUA - The Alvirne High School girls basketball team has gotten off to a great start this season.

Now the Broncos have a bit of hardware to show for their efforts.

Alvirne went on a big run to end the first quarter Friday and get separation from Nashua North, and then held off a late Titans' run to pick up a 49-36 win to capture the Chick-fil-A Holiday Girls Tournament, held at Nashua High School South.

After a back-and-forth start, the Broncos went on a 15-2 run to take a commanding lead in the second quarter, which proved to be the difference down the stretch.

"We got contributions from a lot of people," Alvirne coach Scott Szuksta said. "Our stat sheet was pretty full. We worked on a little bit of everything. They shot really well. I said to the girls that we came out hot, but we weren't going to shoot 80 percent all game. We did a nice job of holding onto the lead once we established it."

Amanda Wetmore led the way for Alvirne, scoring 17 points, including three 3-pointers, while Marissa Sweeney added nine points. Both were named to the all-tournament team, along with Nashua North's Isabel Dunning and Alana Choate and Goffstown's Kelly Walsh.

Dunning finished with a game-high 22 points, but no one else had more than three points for the Titans.

"She's our senior leader," North coach Christina Collins said. "She's that girl who you know is going to step up. She's taken that leadership role on this team and what she wants to do, and she came up big for us."

But in the first quarter, it was Alvirne's top players who were making big shots. After a 3-pointer by Dunning tied the game 7-7, the Broncos scores the next 10 points, including two 3s by Wetmore.

Brenna Paquette added another 3 before the end of the quarter and Wetmore hit another in the second, helping to give Alvirne a 27-13 lead at halftime.

"She's been our offensive workhorse for a long time," Szuksta said of Wetmore. "She continues to improve on her post moves and her shooting, which is really good. She's been a great leader for us as a senior."

Collins thought her players might have been surprised at how well the Broncos shot from the outside.

"We were a little slow to rotate out the 3s," she said. "I think our girls weren't necessarily thinking that some of their big kids could hit those shots. We were a little slow and a little late and they knocked them down over and over again."

The 3-point barrage continued at the start of the second half, as the Broncos made seven 3-pointers as a team. North tried to chip away at the lead, but every time the Titans would appear to gain some momentum, Alvirne would come right back and went up by as many as 15 points.

Both teams resume the Division I regular season on Tuesday, as Alvirne travels to face Keene and North hosts Winnacunnet.
