GOFFSTOWN - After a lengthy lightning delay and a quarter of football, the CHaD East-West All-Star Football game was suspended Friday night early in the second quarter.

The start of the game was delayed more than an hour, as thunderstorms rolled through while both teams were warming up before the start of the game. The teams and fans cleared Grappone Stadium at St. Anselm College, and were under cover for more than 90 minutes as lightning continued in the area.

"It's really frustrating because we're all pumped up, we're ready, we're playing for a great cause," East all-star Christian Peete (Portsmouth) said. "And then bang, lightning. We're pumped up again and playing in front of thousands of fans, and then we have to wait again. It's hard to wait as a player because your body is warm and everything, you get a little stiff."

The teams returned to the field about 45 minutes after the game was supposed to kickoff and quickly warmed up before starting at 8:05\. Rain continued to fall throughout, and another bolt of lightning in the area stopped play just 24 seconds into the second quarter, with the West leading 7-0 on a touchdown by Nick Leahy (Bedford).

Play will be resumed on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Manchester Memorial.

"We get a little bit of information," Leahy said of the delay. "They tell us if we're able to go back out, how much longer every time there's another lightning strike. We try to stay focused and have a little bit of fun, stay excited for the game."

West got on the board on its second drive of the game, scoring on Leahy's 21-yard touchdown run. That score was set up by a 17-yard pass from Justin Grassini (Merrimack) to Parker Smith (Stevens) on third-and-long that gave the West a first down deep in East territory.

"We just tried to get to the outside," Leahy said of the touchdown run. "I think it was Teagan (Vitali of Milford) who had a great block on the outside and I was able to cut it up. I made contact with the linebacker and was able to bounce off and run up the sideline."

Leahy had 33 yards rushing on five carries and Grassini was 1 of 2 passing for 17 yards, while Dan McKillop (Merrimack) and Tim Daigneault (Nashua South) each had four tackles for the West.

Jake Stevens (Londonderry) opened the game 5 of 8 passing for 38 yards for the East, with Pat Cullen (Kennett) catching two passes for 11 yards. Peete had three carries for eight yards in the first quarter.

"This is a very special game," Peete said. "The kids that will be here next year and after, it's a big honor to play in this game and only a certain amount of kids get to. It's just a great cause to come out for and it's a fun game to be a part of."
