A year ago, a few members of the Hollis/Brookline High School wrestling team got a taste of what it’s like to make it to the Meet of Champions.

Those Cavaliers are back, and their bringing a few more teammates with them to this year’s meet, with starts at 9:30 on Saturday at Londonderry.

In all, H/B brings seven wrestlers to the MOCs, one of its highest totals of competitors, after finishing third in the Division II meet last Saturday.

“It’s a big accomplishment, coming from last year where we were real young and kind of inexperienced, to get pretty much half the lineup going is big for us,” Cavs coach Brian Bumpus said. “This weekend is our test to see where we’re at compared to the rest of the state.”

This year’s meet will again feature the top six finishers in each weight class from Division I, along with the top four from Division II. There will also be two extra competitors in each class, as the finalists from Division III will also participate.

H/B had two champions at last week’s meet – Zach McPherson at 103-pounds and Casey Quinn at 160\. Both went to MOCs last year and plan on doing more than just savoring the experience this time around.

“Last year, I just wanted to go, but this year I put my expectations higher,” McPherson said. “I want to win a couple of matches this year.”

Quinn agreed that making it this far was not the final goal.

“Last year, going to that tournament was the icing on the cake,” he said. “It was not expected for a lot of the kids to go. This year, it is expected. There is a longer road to get that icing. We’re not going to get it here, we’re going to get it at New Englands.”

The top three wrestlers in each weight class advance to the New England Championship, which will be held March 4 and 5 at New Haven, Conn.

Joining Quinn and McPherson are three finalists from last week – Taylor Landry (152), Zach Migneault (275) and Jake McPherson (135), Zach’s brother. Also going are Zach Jennings (130) and Tyler Pickard (119). Of those seven wrestlers, only Landry is a senior.

“I’m kind of jealous of these guys,” Landry said. “Next year, the team is going to be crazy. A lot of (the team’s success) comes down to the coaches, and we have some of the best coaches. They kind of drive this team. It’s been young kids and you can see every week, every kid gets better.”

The Cavs will have to be on top of their game at the MOCs, which will also feature 33 other area wrestlers.
