NASHUA - The crowd in the Collignon Gymnasium came Saturday afternoon to see a milestone and the people got what they were there to see.

It just took a little while for it to happen.

Erin Carney scored 19 points, including the 1,000th of her high school career with a little more than five minutes left in the second quarter, and the Bishop Guertin High School girls basketball team picked up a 68-46 win over Mercy, from Middleton, Conn.

Needing just six points to reach the mark, Carney was anxious at the start of the game, missing her first six shots. That, however, didn't stop the Cardinals (9-0) from taking control of the game early, as Bishop Guertin led by 15 points at the end of the first quarter.

By the time Carney finally got the milestone basket, the Cardinals' lead was up to 21.

"I think she was a little nervous, which is a hundred percent to be expected," Bishop Guertin coach Brad Kreick said. "It’s such a great individual achievement. But I also think the rest of the girls were a little nervous about it as well. As great as it is individually for her, it’s really a testament to that whole group."

Brianna Wilcox and Addison Smith each added 14 points for the Cardinals and Hannah Muchemore led a defensive effort that saw Bishop Guertin force Mercy into 26 turnovers.

Mercy (4-9) got 11 points from Sophie Hedge, including three 3-pointers, while Lilly Hedge had all nine of her points in the first half. The Tigers were able to get the lead down to 13 points late in the second quarter, but a 3 by Carney before the buzzer made it 39-23 at halftime, and the Cardinals opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run.

"The way we came out in the third quarter and put the hammer down again was excellent," Kreick said. "We were able to play everybody. The freshmen are still learning, you can see that, but they did some good things and some not so good things. They’re getting better every day."

The Cardinals started the day deferring to Carney on the team's first possession, but her first two attempts came up short.

"I just had to settle down, know that they’ll eventually come," she said. "I was a little anxious about it because everyone is here and the energy was up and everything. It feels good to have it behind me and to have accomplished that. I knew people were making signs but I didn’t think there would be that many."

One classmate had a piece of poster board for each point Carney needed to reach a thousand, and her basket with 20 seconds left in the quarter dropped that number to four. Then, early in the second quarter, she stole the ball and went in for a transition basket that made it 24-9 Cardinals.

"She’s going to get all the accolades for scoring a thousand points, but that kid is a stud defensively," Kreick said. "She’s a special kid. Kids like her do not come around often. The thing I’ll always come away with and will stick in my mind forever is her consistency."

After back-to-back baskets by Smith, Wilcox forced a turnover and found Carney streaking to the basket alone for a layup. Officials stopped the game while the Cardinals mobbed her and fans held up signs congratulating Carney.

"It was really exciting and was really grateful for the opportunity to have accomplished it," she said. "It was a great feeling that I was surrounded by so many of my friends."
