LITCHFIELD - Although the game itself started off fairly slow as a whole, it didn’t take very long for the Campbell High School football team to make quick and dominant work of Stevens, beating the defending champions 33-0 to move on to the Division III championship game.

Cold temperatures and blistering winds played a massive factor, as both offensive units had extreme difficulties getting started. It wasn’t until the final two minutes of the first half that we saw a team start move the ball through the harsh winds and eventually score.

Both the Cardinals and Cougars struggled to find momentum for their run-first offensive approach in the first half, but saw those struggles disappear completely in the second half, when Campbell began to fire on all cylinders and light up the score board. After a six minute final drive of the first half, the Cougars gashed the Cardinal defense for an impressive 31-yard touchdown run by Cougar running back Keegan Mills. Although the two-point conversion was unsuccessful, the touchdown would be the spark that would get the Campbell offense rolling.

Campbell (10-0) followed up its late second quarter touchdown drive with another 37-yard touchdown run by Ryan Yanuszewski (successful two-point conversion). The drive chewed up over three minutes, and gave the Cougars the 14-0 lead.

After the Campbell touchdown drive, the Cougars defense made a massive play and were able to punch the ball out on the Stevens (6-4) run attempt and recover on the Cardinal 48-yard line. Fortunately for the Cardinals, their defense was able to hold the Cougar attack to no points, and forced the turn over on downs after a failed fourth-down conversion.

Stevens was able to piece together a rather impressive drive of its own that, if successful, would bring the game to within one score. But a drive that was led by Stevens quarterback Quetin Bicknell, would end when his pass was tipped, deflected, and eventually intercepted by Campbell’s Adam Breton.

Breton would take the impressive interception all the way from the 10-yard line out past the 40-yard line. This set up the Cougars with excellent field position, and gave them a good amount of time to start another offensive push.

The Stevens defense would eventually hold again, forcing the Cougars to have to punt the ball in a crucial part of the game. Two minutes later, the Stevens offense would turn the ball over again losing it via fumble on a similar type of run play that lost the ball earlier in the game. The Campbell defense was playing very aggressively and was looking to force the turnover on each and every Stevens carry. The Campbell fumble recovery set the Cougars up on the Cardinal 15-yard line with just 43 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The first play of the final quarter resulted in an 11-yard touchdown run by Campbell’s Nick Boucher. The score gave the Cougars the 21-0 lead, and damaged what little hopes the Cardinals had remaining to pull off the upset.

The Cougars defense flew to the ball much of the second half, which forced Bicknell to make some quick decisions and some extremely tough throws. Cougar safety Conor Sweeney made Bicknell pay on multiple occasions, intercepting two passes late in the fourth.

Both interceptions led to Campbell touchdown drives. Mills was back on the score sheet after he ripped the Cardinals defense for a 30-yard touchdown run on third down to give the Cougars a 27-0 lead.

Later, off of the second interception, Yasnuszewski was able to also get back on the score sheet with a 20-yard touchdown run of his own to give the Cougars the 33-0 lead with under five minutes to play. Yasnuszewski was able to finish off the visitors with a late, game-sealing interception of his own to seal the victory and slot in the championship game.
