No one told the Cougars that the sequel isn’t supposed to be as good. After a dominant season-opening win over Somersworth, the Cougars took to their home field for the first time in 2018 and took Epping-Newmarket apart in a 43-6 win. The win was the 13th straight victory for the Cougars. First-year coach Glenn Costello, who was the defensive coordinator under former coach Greg Gush, hasn’t missed a beat with the Cougars so far this season. “I think I’m probably one of the luckier head coaches to transition into an experienced team that knew my face, and we had all the schemes in place when I walked in,” Costello said. “Life is good.” The Cougars controlled the game in all facets. Campbell scored on the second play from scrimmage when junior tailback Keegan Mills went 55 yards for a score in the opening minute. By the end of the first quarter the Cougars led 22-0. Campbell was never challenged in the game and dominated on offense to the tune of 430 yards compared to just 138 gained by the Blue Devils. Mills outgained Epping-Newmarket all by himself with 175 yards rushing on 15 touches and a pair of scores. Senior quarterback Adam Breton was 6 for 9 passing for 95 yards and four touchdowns. He also added 45 yards rushing. Mills also had 7.5 tackles on the defensive side of the ball. “It’s a scary one-two combo,” Costello said. “I think the success of Keegan is directly correlated to Adam Breton. Keegan would be one of the first to tell you that. Adam’s not the most highlighted player, but he’s definitely one of our best.” The line play on both sides of the ball controlled the tempo for Campbell. With the exception of a 55-yard touchdown run from Devon Titus, which accounted for 40 percent of Epping-Newmarket’s total yardage, the Campbell defensive line held firm as the offensive line blew open holes for the backs to sprint through. “They are the hardest working group,” Costello said. “As a former offensive linemen, I have high expectations for our o-line. We are big on our strength and conditioning. We are big on our nutrition, and those guys work hard. On top of being great football players they’re great human beings.” Having a veteran squad, with numerous key players back from last year’s title campaign, has meant that the Cougars have a leg up in the preseason in comparison to their competition. There aren’t many new players to work into the rotation. That means that the chemistry is already there and the team can work to fine-tune things earlier than most. “For us we have very smart players,” Costello said. “Carter Verdani is, on top of being 6-4 and 220 pounds, also the smartest player on any football field that he steps on. Defensively Carter’s able to make multiple checks on any given play. The preparation is usually run by our walkthrough. On game day it’s about doing what we’re supposed to do.” Campbell will have its mettle tested the next two weeks when it travels north to take on Newport and Laconia.
