LITCHFIELD - Keegan Mills didn't know who was chasing him or how close anyone might be to gaining on him.

He was just going to keep running until someone caught him or he crossed the goal line.

The Campbell High School senior busted through the first level of the Monadnock football team's defense and had nothing but green grass in front of him. Mills raced 47 yards for a touchdown - one of five on the day for him - to give the Cougars a lead they had let slip away earlier in the fourth quarter.

After a Huskies turnover on their next possession, Mills added another touchdown run to put a bow on Campbell's 40-27 win over Monadnock in a Division III game Saturday.

The Cougars (7-1) led 26-6 early in the second half before the Huskies (5-3) came back to take a one-point lead on the second play of the fourth quarter. But the two touchdown runs by Mills and two interceptions by Cam Barrett on Monadnock's final two drives completed the rally by Campbell.

"We responded very well," Campbell coach Glen Costello said. "I think when we play a football game, we can be very explosive, and I think the kids demonstrated that. Overall, it’s a good, regular-season win."

Campbell finished with 379 yards of offense, 357 of it on the ground, as Mills had 263 yards and five scores on 27 carries. On the Cougars' first play of the game, the senior went 58 yards untouched for a score, and added touchdown runs of 45, 43, 47 and 19.

"It shouldn’t be a surprise, but Keegan is one of the best players in the state, and the easiest thing to do as a coach is get him the ball," Costello said. "The kids respond to his leadership and rally behind him."

Conor Sweeney added 64 yards rushing, 47 of it on a touchdown run in the first quarter that gave the Cougars a two-score lead.

Lincoln Blodgett led Monadnock with 99 yards rushing on 25 carries and the senior caught a 46-yard touchdown pass from Nate Doyle on the Huskies' first drive of the second half to make it a 26-12 Campbell lead. Doyle finished 4 of 16 for 129 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions and Zion Carroll had three catches for 83 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown reception for Monadnock's first score.

"My hats off to (Monadnock) coach (Ryan) Avery," Costello said. "He does one of the best jobs in the state when it comes to technique and getting his kids to be prepared and putting them in a position to be successful. It’s an excellent program, and I think it starts with him."

After Blodgett's touchdown, the Monadnock defense forced Campbell to punt for the first time and the kick by Kyle Wark was blocked. The Huskies recovered at the Campbell 21, and on the next play, Victor Lotito (60 yards rushing) scored the touchdown and ran in the conversion to cut the lead to 26-20.

The teams traded punts on their next possessions, but on first down from the Campbell 13, Barrett fumbled and Doyle recovered to give Monadnock the ball. Five plays later, Jackson Lepisto scored on third-and-goal from the 9 and Anthony Tomer kicked the extra point to make it 27-26 Huskies with 11:48 to play.

An intentional grounding and an unsportsmanlike call - one of four personal fouls on the Cougars - pushed Campbell back on the ensuing possession and the Cougars punted on fourth-and-45 from their own 15\. Monadnock took over at the Campbell 38, but turned the ball over on downs.

Seven plays later, facing third-and-2 at Monadnock's 47, Mills broke free for the go-ahead score. The Cougars failed on the conversion, but led 32-27 with 3:52 left.

"The line, once they sealed them, it was perfect," he said. "It was just really shutting off one person and then going the whole way. Our line did a good job. I was just running for the end zone. If they get you, they get you, you just have to punch it in from there."

Monadnock went to the air to try to come back, but on fourth-and-7 at the Huskies 43, Doyle was picked off by Barrett, who returned it to the 19-yard line. Mills scored on the next play and Sweeney connected with Carter Vedrani for the conversion and a 13-point lead with 2:36 remaining.

"It’s really a huge motivational thing for us," Mills said of the win. "We know the competition is good this year. We are going to have closer games, so it pushes us to work hard. No matter if we’re up or down in a game, there’s a chance we can come back, so we’ll just keep fighting."
