LITCHFIELD - The Campbell High School boys lacrosse team was getting its first taste of adversity Monday afternoon against Kearsarge.

After seeing a five-goal lead dwindle to three in the final minutes of the first half, Campbell saw it's advantage get even smaller midway through the third quarter, following a manup goal by Kearsarge.

With momentum having swung to the visiting Cougars, the hometown Cougars needed a response, and when Campbell got its own manup opportunity moments later, it capitalized.

Tiernan Sullivan scored on the manup and added another goal just over a minute later, starting Campbell on a 5-0 run that swung momentum back on the way to a 12-6 win over Kearsarge in a Division III game.

"You’re faced with adversity at this point, so what are you going to do with it, because it’s going to get harder as the season goes on," Campbell coach Josh Knight said. "We’ve got to be able to deal with it. Tiernan Sullivan found the spot in the zone a couple of times. I think we’re a good team, we just need to not do too much at times. Let the offense do it’s work and the goals will come."

The goals came as they usually do for Brendan Boschi, as he finished with five goals, including one in the opening minute of the third quarter that was the 100th of his high school career. Sullivan and Jack Noury finished with two goals apiece while John Newell, Andrew Willnus and Nick Carignan also had a goal each.

Ryan Guerrette finished with three saves as Campbell (4-0) held Kearsarge to just 20 shot attempts, only five of which came in the first half when Kearsarge (2-1) struggled with clears and maintaining possessions. Fourteen of the team's 23 turnovers came in the opening 24 minutes.

"We know exactly what we need to do," Kearsarge coach Tucker Johnson said. "It makes my job easy and it makes it frustrating. I think they maybe had one or two failed clears all day and were maybe 50-50\. I think that turned into seven goals, and that’s the difference. It’s frustrating because its something we work on in practice, and it showed up (in wins) against Gilford and Hillsboro-Deering. You’ve got to be ready to play lacrosse and we weren’t."

Kearsarge got three goals from John Fraioli, two of which came in the final four minutes of the first half that cut Campbell's 6-1 lead down to three. Matt Berns added two goals for Kearsarge and Anders Sailer had one.

Kristian Nurme finished with 18 saves for Kearsarge, including 12 in the first half to keep his team in the game.

"He’s been huge," Johnson said. "It’s a 20-goal game without him."

It looked like it could be when Noury and Willnus scored in the first 2:12 of the game. Johnson used a timeout after the second goal and Kearsarge's defense was able to regroup before Sailer scored to make it a 2-1 game with 5:33 left in the first quarter.

But Boschi scored twice before the end of the quarter and Noury added another goal 55 seconds into the second to make it 5-1\. Newell made it 6-1 with his goal with 6:46 to go in the first half and Kearsarge used another timeout.

The break worked again for Kearsarge, as Fraioli scored twice in a span of 1:44 to get his team back in it. Boschi appeared to take momentum back, scoring 33 seconds into the third quarter for his milestone goal, but Kearsarge won the ensuing faceoff and kept possession for three minutes, until Berns scored to get the margin back to three goals.

"They were definitely some mental lapses that we’ve got to work on," Knight said. "The silly penalties, the throwing it away, pushing in transition when we don’t need to push. We need to do a little better job of seeing the field as a whole instead of what’s right in front of us. Recognizing and working on the lacrosse IQ, seeing what is there and when we have it and when we don’t have it."

Kearsarge won the faceoff again, but Guerrette came up with a save and Campbell looked to get out in transition. Instead, the ball ended up getting tossed around the midfield until Campbell's Eric Coates was assessed a two-minute penalty for an illegal body check.

Despite all that time, Kearsarge only needed 14 seconds to score, as Fraioli found Berns out in front of the net for a goal, making it 7-5 Campbell with 6:49 remaining in the third quarter.

A procedural penalty on Kearsarge on the faceoff gave Campbell the ball, and after another scrum for a groundball, Fraioli was called for a push, giving Campbell a 30-second manup.

It needed all of it, as Sullivan scored as the penalty expired to make it 8-5, and after the defense made a stop, Boschi found Sullivan out in front again for another score and a 9-5 lead with 4:06 left in the third.

"To get the momentum back at that point, it was a good thing," Boschi said of that sequence. "At the same time, it got everybody back involved. Our defense lets up one goal the rest of the game. It turned the tide for us."

Carignan scored off the faceoff just 33 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it 10-5, and Boschi added some insurance goals in the quarter before Fraioli finished out the scoring with 1:24 to play.

"It was nice to see the kids fight with adversity when they scored a few in a row in the third," Knight said. "It was nice to see them settle down, figure out what we have, go from there. We can do a better job of that, but it’s nice to see us taking the steps we need to."
