The starting pitcher on the Merrimack High School softball team has hit the ground running in every facet during her rookie season and that continued Wednesday afternoon, as she threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout during a 7-0 win over visiting Nashua South. Camberlain finished with seven strikeouts and walked three, while retiring the side in order during the second and fifth. “I could not be prouder of Emma for the way that she worked and finished seven innings strong,” said Merrimack coach Greg Cochrane. “Emma’s got a lot of talent. The future is incredibly bright for her. She has worked incredibly hard to change some of her approach. The kid has a lot of guts out there.” The Tomahawks (5-5) have won four of their last five games, and the only lost came by one run, 11-10, at Bedford on May 1\. On Wednesday, freshman Grace Lawton (2 for 4, RBI, run) and junior Kaeley Blades (2 for 3, RBI) led the way, as Merrimack finished with 10 hits and made only one error. “When someone is down there is always someone there to pick them up,” said Cochrane about his team’s chemistry. “The kids do everything right as a group, and they respect our game plan and execute. I could not be prouder of the way they are playing as of late.” Merrimack opened the scoring in the bottom half of the first. Junior Demetria Gonzalez led off with a walk, stole second, and then crossed home plate on a pair of throwing errors by South (1-8). Blades clocked a one-out single through the right side in the second, and then freshman pinch runner Ashlynn Cassetty stole second and advanced to third on an error. During the ensuing at bat, senior Jessica Trahan drove a sacrifice fly to right, plating Cassetty with Merrimack’s second run. In the bottom of the third, Gonzalez led off with an infield single on a sharply hit ball to second. The senior outfielder stole second, and then sophomore Erin Knauer laid down a bunt and an error by the third baseman allowed Gonzalez to cross home, giving the Tomahawks a 3-0 advantage. With one down in the frame, Lawton connected on an RBI single to center and Camberlain unloaded on a one-run double to right, extending the lead to 5-0. “We had a good game plan going in and we executed it (perfectly),” said Cochrane. “We wanted to be aggressive on the base paths. We were able to lay down bunts to move runners around, and our power hitters came through with RBIs.” Senior Ashley Turcotte stole home on a double steal in the fourth, giving the Tomahawks a 6-0 cushion. In the bottom of the fifth, junior Morgan Peffer crushed a one-out double to the gap in right-center, and during the next at bat, the scoring ended with a one-run single up the middle by Blades. Trahan made an outstanding play at third in the sixth for the Tomahawks, as she stopped a hard-hit ball down the line, and then was able to turn and throw the runner out at first. With no outs in the top of the seventh, Knauer made a heads-up play on a ground ball to right field, as she threw out the batter at first base. The Panthers received singles from Sarah Picard and Alissa Escobales, but six errors broke South's back, with five of the seven runs being unearned. South has a big weekend coming up with some in-city rivals on the schedule, as the Panthers will host Bishop Guertin on Friday at 4 p.m. and Nashua North on Saturday at 10 a.m. “I think when you play BG and North, the records go out the window,” said South coach Kevin Handy. “It is like a championship game because the energy is different. The in-town rivalry is huge because you want to be the best in the city. The kids will definitely come to play for those.” Merrimack will be back in action on Thursday with a 4 p.m. home game against Winnacunnet.
