# Bulldogs, Cavs fight for playoff position

The lights are back as Friday night football returns to Hollis.

For the second straight year, the Hollis/Brookline High School football team will host a game on Friday night underneath the rented lights. This season, it will be Bedford visiting Coach Kourkoulis Field for a Division III game at 7 p.m.

Despite the potential for wet weather, Bulldogs coach Kurt Hines expect the atmosphere to be good for just the second football game to played at night at H/B.

“It’s going to be a wonderful atmosphere,” Hines said. “They’re a good program and they took it to us bad last year. (The weather) shouldn’t have an effect on us. It really comes down to the basics. Its football and its which team wants it more.”

Both teams could use the win. Bedford (4-1 in division, 5-1 overall) is coming off its first loss of the season, falling to Milford last week 28-7\. The Bulldogs are one of four teams in the division with one loss, as is H/B (3-1, 3-2).

The winner will have the edge on one of the four playoff spots in division, which would be a first for either program.

The Bulldogs have been working to move past what Hines called “the inevitable.”

“(The loss) was just a question of who and by how much,” he said. “It was a good wake-up call. We know we’re a good program, but we have a long way to go.”

Against Milford, the Bulldogs turned the ball over three times and struggled to wrap up the Spartans on defense. The result was a 300-yard day by Milford’s offense.

“It was a combination of double dives and counters,” Hines said. “We didn’t walk away thinking there was stuff we have to change.”

What Bedford will have to do is be ready for more of the same from H/B. The Cavaliers are a run heavy offense, like Milford, and are led by the power running of Brian Liamos and Colin Pellerin. With the status of quarterback Kyle Gervais in question – he was hurt in the fourth quarter of last week’s win over Con-Val – H/B could rely on the run even more.

“Liamos is definitely a force to be reckoned with,” Hines said. “I think we matchup pretty well. Their line isn’t overly big, but they get off the ball really well. The run is the greatest strength. We need to get our secondary players in on run support.”

Offensively, the Bulldogs will look to improve on a performance that saw them gain 244 total yards last week. Quarterback James Caparell threw for 142 yards against Milford, but he completed just half of his throws.

“It’s going to come down to basics,” Hines said. “We need to be capitalizing on their mistakes and not turn the ball over.”
