# Broncos try for first division win against Raiders

The Alvirne High School football team got off the schneid last week, getting its first win of the season in a non-division game against Pelham.

This week, the Broncos go on the road looking for their first Division II win of the year against a team that hasn’t won a league game in exactly three years. Alvirne (0-5 division, 1-6 overall) will take on Spaulding (0-6, 1-6) in Rochester for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday.

Alvirne coach Bobby Nimblett isn’t worried about his team going in overconfident after last week because the Broncos know they can’t be.

“We’re still searching for our first divisional win, too,” he said. “Last year, when we were a pretty good football team, we went up there and they battled us in the first half. (The players) know that they’re not just going to walk into Spaulding and get a win.”

Nimblett also believes the Red Raiders, who lost to Merrimack last week 47-6, have to be a little happy to see Alvirne coming to town as well.

“They’ll probably be excited to see us coming out there,” Nimblett said. “They have good skill kids and their offensive line is pretty good, they’ve been starting for a few years and they have some experience. We’ve got to make sure we travel well. We usually travel well.”

One thing Alvirne hasn’t been able to do as well lately is run the football. One reason for that has been injuries to key members of the backfield, including running backs Sean Sipsey and Jon Baldwin and quarterback Pat Reidy.

Baldwin returned against Pelham and ran for 78 yards, while Sipsey had 75 yards rushing, but tweaked his injured ankle during the second half. Nimblett believes Sipsey will be able to play against Spaulding, as will Reidy, who missed a few games with a shoulder injury.

“Johnny Baldwin played last week and he should be good this week,” Nimblett said. “He’s been good so far. Pat Reidy is back. He’ll be quarterbacking for us. Sipsey is still dealing with the ankle. He had a great first half against Pelham and kind of tweaked it a little bit.”

While Reidy, who also played on defense, was out, another player – sophomore Britton Doyle – stepped in on that side of the ball, so now the quarterback won’t have to play both ways, which is something the coaching staff hoped would be the case all season.

Now with a win under their belts, Nimblett is hopeful the Broncos can build off it in their final three games. After Spaulding, Alvirne plays Bishop Guertin and Manchester West to finish the season.

“I think it’s going to be great for us in the upcoming weeks,” he said. “We still didn’t play as well as we’d have liked to. We kept it closer than maybe it should have been. But a win is a win and hopefully it will open it up and we can get a few more.”
