Boys hockey rankings for Feb. 13

Despite dropping its first game of the season, the Concord High School boys hockey team managed to hang on to the top spot in the rankings.

The Crimson Tide lost to Bedford 1-0 in overtime last Saturday, but managed to hold off Bishop Guertin, which beat Bedford on Wednesday, to keep the No. 1 ranking for another week. Concord will host the Cardinals in the regular-season finale on March 5.

Bedford dropped a spot to No. 3 after the loss to Bishop Guertin while moved up to No. 4 following its win over Keene last weekend. Merrimack also moved up a spot to round out the top five.

How the rankings are done

We took the NHIAA’s football rating system, and gave it a little tweak. Instead of 10 points for a win, we weighted the wins by division, giving 12 for a win over a D1 team, 10 for a win over D2 and eight for a win over D3, and half the points for a tie. Plus, every team got two points for a win by a beaten opponent and half the points for a tie. The two point totals were added together and divided by the number of games played.
