Another week and another team takes over the top spot in the state-wide rankings.

After handing last week's No. 1 Milford its first loss of the season, Portsmouth jumps up to the top spot in the state. For the Clippers, it was their sixth win this year of 25 points or more, and they've won four games by 40 or more points this season. Central held on to No. 2 in the rankings while Merrimack climbed back into the top five with a win over Londonderry.

Conant had the biggest week of any team in the state, handing Pelham and Hopkinton each its first loss of the season, landing the Orioles at No. 4. Winnisquam, the only undefeated team left in Division III, rounds out the top five.

Here are the top 15 rankings and rankings for each division. They will be updated every Monday throughout the regular season.

How the rankings are done

We took the NHIAA’s football rating system, and gave it a little tweak. Instead of 10 points for a win, we weighted the wins by division, giving 12 for a win over a D1 team, 10 for a win over D2, eight for a win over D3, and six for a win over D4. Plus, every team got two points for a win by a beaten opponent. The two point totals were added together and divided by the number of games played.
