The new year is more than a week old and some boys basketball teams are already a quarter of the way through the season.

There are some surprises in the season's first rankings, but a familiar face sits at the top of the state's Top 15 teams - undefeated Manchester Central. The Little Green will put that distinction on the line Tuesday night, when they travel to Nashua North to face another Top 15 team.

Also at the top of the rankings are two other undefeated Division I teams in Winnacunnet and Exeter, while Pelham, which has won 27 games in a row in Division III, sits at No. 4. Rounding out the top five is a surprise in Milford, which is 4-0 in Division II.

How the rankings are done

We took the NHIAA’s football rating system, and gave it a little tweak. Instead of 10 points for a win, we weighted the wins by division, giving 12 for a win over a D1 team, 10 for a win over D2, eight for a win over D3, and six for a win over D4. Plus, every team got two points for a win by a beaten opponent. The two point totals were added together and divided by the number of games played.
