EXETER - It felt like a big moment to Elsa Bishop and Dani Caron.

With time ticking away in the fourth quarter of Saturday's Division I quarterfinal, the Exeter High School field hockey team was about to start a second attempt at a penalty corner. The first was stopped when a Bedford player left early and had to go out to midfield.

The Bulldogs were down a player, and Bishop and Caron had a quick exchange before the Blue Hawks lined up on how to now handle the corner.

"When we saw they were down a player, I turned to Dani and said take what you feel is right," Bishop said. "If you see that opening, take it, and if you don’t, slip it to me. I’ll try to get that opening."

Caron received the ball to start the corner and passed it back to Bishop, who stopped it and then crushed a shot toward the left side of the goal.

Bedford goalie Addison Wolfinger got her leg out to try to make the save, but the shot was just out of her reach and smashed off the backboard to give No. 3 Exeter a 1-0 lead that it never relinquished to beat the No. 6 Bulldogs at Bill Ball Stadium.

"We know that Bedford is really good defensively when they’re flying," Caron said. "We were going to do a slip, but if the option was there, just take it. I decided to slip because I know Elsa will always finish for us, she’s that type of player. She’ll keep going until the last minute and she finished it for us."

The goal came with 8:33 remaining, and with the lead secured, the Blue Hawks (14-3) adjusted their focus to keeping the Bulldogs (13-4-1) from tying it.

"We knew the only way we’d probably be able to do it was on a corner," Exeter coach Deb Grott said. "We were able to execute it. If we were able to score again, that’s a wonderful thing, but we had to go and play a defensive game."

Exeter did that all game and held a Bedford offense that scored four goals against the Blue Hawks in a regular-season win off the scoreboard. Goalie Amalia Gloss finished with eight saves to lead Exeter's defense, which had to defend 11 penalty corners for the Bulldogs.

It looked as if Bedford had taken a lead early in the second half, when Eloise Montagano sent a ball toward the goal from just outside the circle. While the shot bounced through and made its way into the cage, officials ruled it wasn't touched on the way in, keeping it a scoreless game.

The Blue Hawks had a couple of corners after that, but Wolfinger came up with a pair of saves and Brooke Poirier also had a defensive stop to keep Exeter off the board.

But with the clocking ticking under nine minutes in the fourth, Bishop finally broke through for Exeter.

"The whole game, we were just trying to get opportunities in our offensive circle, either try to catch a foot or just accelerating through toward the net," she said. "That’s something we’ve been practicing in the past week, just our positioning.

"Dani Caron received the ball, tracked right and slipped it (left) to me. I saw the opportunity to swing and hopefully get it back in the net. That celebration will be something we’ll remember throughout the rest of the season, and hopefully, that will be a long time."

Exeter moves on to the semifinals for the fourth year in a row, where it will face No. 2 Dover at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Bill Ball Stadium.
