# Bishop Guertin's win in D1 girls lacrosse final caps off personal three-peat for Daley

Going into the school year, Kate Daley knew there was a chance that all three teams she played for at Bishop Guertin High School would have a chance at winning a championship.

Not only did all three teams - girls soccer, girls basketball and girls lacrosse - win Division I titles, but they did it in dramatic fashion and at the expense of one other school.

"Going into this year, I didn’t think I’d be playing Bedford in all three ’ships," Daley, a junior defender, said. "I knew that if there was ever going to be a year that I could go 3 for 3, it would be this year. I’ve got some of the best teammates around, supporting me in all my sports. The fact that it was all against Bedford, basically our rival, makes it even better."

While the Cardinals had to fend off a second-half comeback by Bedford in a 13-7 win in Tuesday's girls lacrosse final, that may have been the least stressful of the three titles.

In the D1 soccer final, Bishop Guertin scored the game's only goal late to get a 1-0 win, and in the D1 basketball final, the Cardinals needed a late comeback of their own to best the Bulldogs 48-46.

Bishop Guertin's Kate Daley won championships this year as a member of the soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams.

Those experiences helped Daley in the most recent final, when Bishop Guertin got out to a seven-goal lead, only to see Bedford control play for stretches of the second half and cut the lead to four goals.

"This is my third one this year," she said. "You look at the basketball championship, we were down for most of that game. You look at the soccer championship, we didn’t score until almost the last 10 minutes of that game. It gives me that piece of mind knowing that I’ve been here and I’ve gotten through it, to just stay calm and be able to push through and rely on my teammates in moments like that.

"I’m surrounded by my best friends. For me, this game, my lacrosse teammates, they're all my best friends and knowing that I’m playing for those seniors that I know I won’t be able to ever again."

The seniors had quite a bit of championship experience for themselves coming into the game, with some not only having played in the 2021 title-game win over Pinkerton, but also in the 2019 final as freshmen.

"It feels really good being able to close off with something like this," Bishop Guertin senior goalie Makenna Reekie said. "Obviously, I would have been really grateful if we didn’t win because we made it so far and that means a lot to me because I never thought I’d be going to BG in my life.

"But then I did and we won this much, and it feels so good. I feel so happy to have had the opportunity to even come to the school. To be able to play on this team and be as successful as we have been for this many years, it feels so good."

Those previous title-game experiences helped the Cardinals know what to do when the Bulldogs had taken the momentum.

"Breathe," senior Rylee Bouvier said of what she was thinking. "The ball was in our possession and were in control of the game for most of it. They put a few on the board, coach took a timeout, and we regrouped. Took a deep breath and settled. We had to take care of the ball and play our game again."

Getting to experience the pressure of a championship game hasn't just helped Daley on the field.

"I certainly used that (experience)," Daley said. "I feel like I’ve grown so much as a person this year, going through all that. It allows you to have that piece of mind knowing that it’s not the end of the world. You can calm down and stay in control of your emotions and stay within yourself."
