# Bishop Guertin's Hiscoe preparing for football season with eye to future

Austin Hiscoe doesn't try to sugarcoat the 2017 season for the Bishop Guertin High School football team.

After three-straight postseason appearances, the Cardinals turned in one of their worst seasons in recent memory, going 1-8 while it seemed almost every experienced player missed time with injury.

But while those bumps and bruises forced younger players into the starting lineup - in some cases, well before they were ready - it gives Hiscoe reason to be optimistic.

"The future is bright with a lot of juniors," said Hiscoe, himself a junior. "A lot of them got a lot of playing time last year, so they’ll be ready for varsity. I believe we’ll be good for the future."

When Hiscoe thinks of the future, he's not just thinking of next season.

"I’m trying to tell everyone, let’s not look to next year, let’s win now," he said. "Last year wasn’t the year we wanted to have, and we want to do better than that. That’s the mentality right now, to get stronger, to get more physical, to get faster, to win more games."

The Cardinals have a new coach leading the way this season, after Jeff Moore stepped down following the conclusion of his third season. Taking his place will be John Trisciani, who teaches at Bishop Guertin and was an assistant coach with Moore before stepping away from the program last season.

Trisciani's familiarity with the program has made it easier to get reacquainted with the players during the offseason, especially Hiscoe.

"Having a relationship with somebody like Austin, who got voted a captain by his peers, it’s someone I can lean on to lead and do the right things," Trisciani said. "Austin played a ton of varsity football last year as a sophomore, and as a freshman, he got into some games later in the year. He’s got that experience."

Going into last season, Hiscoe expected to see a lot of varsity playing time despite being a sophomore. With holes to fill at receiver, his position on offense, he knew he'd have a great chance at being in the starting lineup, at least on one side of the ball.

"I was planning to play a lot and that was the deal," Hiscoe said. "Last year was tough, we had a tough schedule, but it taught me a lot. You’ve got to keep pushing through it. You can’t just roll over. You’ve got to get stronger and you’ve got to do it."

Getting stronger is perhaps the one thing Hiscoe has focused on the most during the summer, as he felt he needed to do a better job of taking hits.

"He’s definitely gotten bigger," Trisciani said. "I think, too, not only getting stronger, it’s going to make it faster and make him jump higher.

"He’s one of the best athletes in the school and we’re happy to have him. Once basketball ended, he’s been as committed as anybody, coming to the weight room and being there for 7-on-7s. A lot of times, when it comes to being a leader, it’s are you there, are you present. Can the kids go to you and look up to you."

Before coming to Bishop Guertin, Hiscoe had someone that he could watch and learn, as his older brother, Jordan Hiscoe, was the starting quarterback for the Cardinals as a senior in 2015, helping to lead the team to a playoff berth.

Although the two never played in high school together, Austin Hiscoe picked up on what his brother, who is now at American International College, was going through and tried to remember every detail.

"I learned a lot from him," Hiscoe said. "It took a few years before I started. Every year, I saw him grow and get stronger and go through the recruiting process. For me, it motivated me and that’s what I want to go do. He did a great job in high school and now he’s at college, and I want to do that."

Hiscoe, who also started last season for the varsity basketball team and ran track in the spring, hopes to catch the eye of some college football coaches this year, but his main focus is helping the Cardinals be a successful team this year.

If that means making the playoffs, great, but at the very least, it's improving on the win total from last year.

"Making the playoffs is obviously one (goal), but first we’ve got to improve on 1-8," Hiscoe said. "We’ve got to focus on that first, going game by game and getting wins. We’ve got to be better than that."
