The Bishop Guertin High School football team is returning to a place it hasn’t really been in a while.

The Cardinals return to Stellos Stadium Saturday night to host Dover in a Division II contest, just Bishop Guertin’s second game at home this season. It feels more like the first to coach Tony Johnson.

“It feels like we’ve been on the road for the first five weeks of the season,” Johnson said. “It’s tiresome. It’s been a long five weeks. We had one at home (against Spaulding on Sept. 17), but it has seemed that we’ve been on the road. Even our scrimmages were on the road.”

Bishop Guertin did scrimmage Nashua North at Stellos in the preseason, but the Cardinals wore their white road jerseys. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday.

When the Cardinals take the field, they’ll be trying to start a new winning streak. Last week, Bishop Guertin had its 20-game win streak ended by Catholic Memorial of West Roxbury, Mass., in a game that Johnson believes his team could have won.

“We’re starting to get a little more experienced with the younger kids,” he said. “I was more disappointed that we had opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on.”

The Cardinals drove down to the Knights’ 3-yard line on their first drive, but lost a fumble to stop the threat. There were too-many-men penalties and a couple of break downs on special teams, one that led to a punt return for a touchdown.

But the Cardinals (3-0 in division, 4-1 overall) responded to the return with a touchdown drive of their own to make it a 19-14 game late in the third.

“We actually had almost total control of the game,” Johnson said. “Momentum was on our side and we should have had the ball inside the 50, and we didn’t capitalize on that. That’s why I was disappointed, because we had opportunities to close out the game and we didn’t do it.”

Dover (2-2, 2-3) enters the game having put its season back on track in the last two weeks. The Green Wave opened the season by losing to Exeter, Merrimack and Winnacunnet by a combined 11 points before walloping Spaulding and Alvirne in its last two games.

“They’re very good,” Johnson said. “They’re big, they’re strong, they’ve got good skill people. They look like the mirror image of Merrimack. They have a quarterback, he’s not a big kid, but he throws the ball around and he runs the offense effectively. They have a big offensive line and they’re defense is always aggressive. They have a lot of skill.”
