MANCHESTER – It wasn’t pretty, but no team gets style points for winning semifinal games.

The Bishop Guertin High School girls basketball team had a bad shooting night Thursday in the Division I final, but the Cardinals will play for a second-straight division title because Londonderry was a little bit worse.

No. 1 Bishop Guertin shot 27 percent from the field and turned the ball over 21 times, but No. 4 Londonderry hit just 19 percent of its field goals and fell to the Cardinals 46-33 at Southern New Hampshire University.

Meghan Green led all scorers with 24 points and the senior also grabbed 24 rebounds, 18 on the defensive end. While everyone else was struggling to shoot, Green was 8 of 13 from the field and 7 of 8 from the free throw line.

“We weren’t hitting any outside shots and before the game, we said we wanted to establish an inside presence,” Green said. “That’s what we did. I knew that since they’re a bigger team than most, they’d be able to rebound better and I wanted to get in on the boards and get some putbacks.”

Jamie Sherburne added 13 points, including a 7-for-10 night at the free throw line, but the rest of the Cardinals (20-1) were a combined 3 for 30 from the field.

But Londonderry (16-5) wasn’t much better. The Lancers made 11 of 58 shots, including 3 of 12 from behind the arc, and had just one player in double figures, Casey Evans (12 points). Aliza Simpson had six points before fouling out with 4:37 left in the fourth quarter.

“If there’s a team that we didn’t want to face in the semis, it was them,” Bishop Guertin coach Scott Hazelton said. “They’re very talented, they’re big, they’re physical, they’re determined.”

Despite scoring just 19 points through the first 22 minutes of the game and trailing by eight, the Lancers fought their way back into the game late in the third quarter.

Down 27-19, a 3-pointer by Simpson and two free throws by Evans, sandwiched around a two foul shots by Bishop Guertin’s Nicole Hayner, made it a five-point game at the end of the third quarter.

Evans made back-to-back layups to open the fourth and suddenly the Cardinals’ lead was down to one. After Bishop Guertin missed a shot, the Lancers brought the ball down the floor with the chance to take the lead, but a layup attempt by Simpson rolled in and out and Green grabbed the rebound.

Sherburne and Green then combined to make 7 of 8 free throws to push the lead back up to eight points. The Cardinals were 14 of 16 from the line in the second half, which proved to be key as they went more than eight minutes without a basket.

“Any points you can take, you’ve got to take them,” Hazelton said. “That was as bad an offensive game as I’ve ever seen us play. Not taking anything away from Londonderry, I thought they played great defense on us. I thought in the second half, we had open looks that we normally make and we didn’t make them. We had a lot of open looks. They got open looks, too.”

A 3 by Londonderry’s Brittany Roche finally stopped the scoreless streak, but with the Lancers pressing, Green was able to get behind the defense and add a trio of easy baskets in the final moments to put the game away.

Now Bishop Guertin will take on Bedford in the final Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at SNHU. The teams split two games this season, with the Cardinals winning during the regular season and the Bulldogs getting the victory on the title game of the Nashua North Holiday Tournament.
