NASHUA - The Bishop Guertin High School girls volleyball team hasn't made things easy for itself this season, but that may be why the Cardinals are able to handle situations like Monday night.

After dropping the first game to Hollis Brookline, Bishop Guertin battled back for a 3-1 victory over the Cavaliers in a rematch of last year's Division I championship. Game scores were 22-25, 25-21, 25-18 and 26-24, with Bishop Guertin overcoming a snafu at the scorer's table to comeback in the fourth game for the win.

"This year we've only won once in three (games)," Bishop Guertin coach Abby Savard said. "We lost one, we know it's not the end. Or we win one, and we know it's not the end. We've gone to multiple matches that have been five games. It's not a big deal for them. They just say let’s start new."

It wasn't a big deal for the Cardinals (7-2) when they went from leading the fourth game to all of a sudden trailing when the official scorers thought they had the points mixed up. By the time anyone on the benches or the court noticed, the referees deemed it too late to correct, and continued play with HB up 12-9.

The Cavs (7-2) led for the rest of the fourth game, including 24-22, before the Cardinals came back to win it 26-24.

Margaret Richardson led Bishop Guertin with seven kills and five blocks while Meagan Morelli had 13 digs, six kills and two blocks. Jenna McCormack had 30 assists and Jill Rabasco added nine kills and two aces, while Abbi Field had five blocks and two kills and Mariana Gomez had 32 digs.

HB got 10 kills from Elizabeth Atkinson and seven kills from Kaleigh Whalen while Kira Beldon had 25 assists and three aces. Sammie Sheppard added 15 digs.

But after battling back and forth with the Cardinals for a win in the first game, the Cavs struggled with their serving in Games 2 and 3\. HB was able to keep pace in the second game, holding the lead until Bishop Guertin came on late, but got behind 15-6 in the third game before eventually cutting the lead to four.

"We're usually a much better serving team than that, (so) it's frustrating," HB coach Becky Balfour said. "This is all dress rehearsal for the tournament. I'm looking forward to that. We know every match is going to be a great match."

Both teams are back on the court on Wednesday, as Bishop Guertin heads to Manchester Central and HB travels to Concord.
