The Bishop Guertin High School girls volleyball team has started off this season right where the Cardinals left off last year.

After making a surprise run to the Division I championship, where the Cardinals fell to Hollis Brookline, Bishop Guertin is 9-2 this year and tied for third in the division.

But that doesn't mean things have always gone smoothly for the Cardinals this season.

Despite the record, only two of Bishop Guertin's nine wins have been sweeps, and five times this year, the Cardinals have had a match go to a fifth game, where they are 3-2 this season.

"We lost one, we know it's not the end," Bishop Guertin coach Abby Savard said about her team's resiliency. "Or we win one, and we know it's not the end. We've gone to multiple matches that have been five games. It's not a big deal for them. They just say let's start new."

It might help that the lineup has been so fluid for the Cardinals this year. With the exception of setter Jenna McCormack, no one player stays on the court for the entire match, as Bishop Guertin's depth has allowed Savard to feel confident in anyone on the bench.

"We really do have versatility on the bench and the girls know that," she said. "I think that pushes them to be better. This year's team, we have no superstar. We have no one person and I think that's what makes them so amazing. We have a little bit of everything and that's what is going to make us who we are."

Bishop Guertin catches a break during the regular season in not playing undefeated Concord, and the Cardinals have only two teams left on the schedule - Spaulding (9-1) and Goffstown (6-5) - who currently have a winning record.

"There's a target on our backs," Savard said. "There's something to be said about losing a few games, and we lost (Sept. 23) in five. That was a tough loss. The girls come into a game saying our greatest glory isn't never falling, but rising when we fall. That's what they do."
