With the Bishop Guertin High School girls volleyball team on the verge of being the one on the wrong side of an marathon back-and-forth battle, the Cardinals coach took a time, rallied the troops, and the players regrouped. Bishop Guertin went on to a 33-31 win in that opening game against Nashua South, and stormed out to a big lead in the second game before holding off the Panthers in the final two games to win 3-0 in Division I action. Game scores were 33-31, 25-23 and 25-21. "As a team, they came together and played very cohesive and very well together," Rosen said. "I think the momentum from winning that definitely carried through. To go that far and be defeated, it can be very heartbreaking. You can handle each situation as a positive or a negative, and I said to them, no matter the outcome, we get the next point." Julia Pascucci recorded 13 assists, six kills and three aces for Bishop Guertin, while Elizabeth Knapp had 10 digs and eight kills. Mariana Gomez added 22 digs, seven kills and four aces and Paola Matos had 19 digs and two aces. South got 18 digs and four aces from Alexie Dearborn, while Amber Hedquist had five kills and five blocks and Brianna Henderson chipped in with eight digs, seven kills and five aces. Down 28-27 to the Panthers, the Cardinals (4-0) used a timeout and tied the game up to stay alive. South (3-1) pulled back ahead two more times before Bishop Guertin was able to grab momentum, winning four of the final five points to take Game 1. That momentum carried into the second game, as the Cardinals led by as many as seven points, as the Panthers tried to work their way back into it. "Absolutely, it took a little wind out of our sails and I don’t think they ever recovered fully, and then (Bishop Guertin) jumped out on us," South coach Wayne Siejkowski said. "It just put them even more in desperation mode. We don’t play good desperate, we play good in control. We’ve been in control in other matches, where we set the tempo, and we let BG set the tempo." Bishop Guertin led 18-11 in the second game when South started to respond, winning seven straight points to tie it up. The Panthers looked like they might pull ahead when the serve by Paige Garland caromed backward off one of the Cardinals, but Gomez ran it down to keep it alive and Bishop Guertin ended up winning the point. The Cardinals were able to get some breathing room, going up 21-18, and although South pulled within one point twice, Bishop Guertin held on for the win. South got out to a 12-6 lead in the third game, but responded, winning eight of nine points to take the lead. "It’s a game of runs," Rosen said. "A team will go on a run, and we have to battle back and go on a run. In those moments where a team is coming back, it’s about mental toughness. That says something about the team about how tough they are. As a team, they have each other’s back, so it’s easy to move forward when we make mistakes." The teams went back and forth again, with South going up 20-19, but Bishop Guertin would take six of the final seven points to clinch the win. South returns to action on Friday when it hosts Concord (5-0) at 6:15 p.m. Bishop Guertin is off until Sept. 18, when it hosts Timberlane (3-2) at 6:15 p.m.
