NASHUA - Leslie Why was waiting for the moment for over a year, so why not take the extra time to remember it.

The Bishop Guertin High School girls lacrosse coach was finally getting to lead the Cardinals on the field for the first time, and as the players came out to play, she pulled out her phone and recorded it.

And when the game started, the Cardinals gave their new coach a first game she'll never forget.

Bishop Guertin jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first half and cruised to a 17-4 win over Londonderry in the first game of the season for both teams at Stellos Stadium in Nashua.

Rylee Bouvier had five goals to lead the Cardinals (1-0) while Nat Coutu had two goals and six assists and Tess Prunier added three goals to give Why her first win as varsity coach.

"It felt really, really good just to see them out here," the coach said. "I video taped them as we walked out on the field because it’s pretty emotional just to be back here.

"We’ve got a really nice distribution of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. We have a huge senior class. We’ve got tons of committed players. They’re all so committed to playing in college, but they’re also committed to each other and this program and this team. It’s amazing and to see them play and utilize each other the way they did."

Bishop Guertin also got a goal and two assists from Madison Keating while Amelia Piercy had a goal and an assist. Stephanie Reap, Lindsay Hult, Lauren Redfern, Kate Simpson and Tannah O'Neill-Blake also had a goal apiece and Kyla Pascucci added an assist.

Londonderry (1-0) got two goals each from Caroline Leone and Tara Wright while Kathryn Martin made five saves.

"It was an exciting night for us to see what our girls can do and we got those first-game jitters out," said Londonderry coach Kelly Gordon, who was also coaching her first game. "We saw some really good things from our girls. We have a really strong group of athletes. We definitely have some things we need to work on, but little fixes here and there."

The Cardinals took an 8-2 lead into halftime and opened the second half with three straight goals, going up 11-2 on a score by Coutu with 20:12 left in the game. Londonderry came right back and netted two of the next three scores to get back within eight at 12-4.

"We’ve got fighters," Gordon said. "We have a group, the way I’d describe them is tough. They’re tough athletes. I’m expecting big things out of them."

But the Lancers were unable to beat the Cardinals' defense again and Bishop Guertin's offense proved to be too much, whether the Cardinals were in transition or running their sets.

"We had 10 different kids score," Why said. "That’s what makes us such a threat and hard to deal with. You can mark Rylee Bouvier or Lindsay Hult, but you’re still going to have a whole host of people you might not have heard of before, but they can finish with the best of them."

The teams will meet against at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Londonderry.
