NASHUA - If there's one thing the Bishop Guertin High School girls lacrosse team has learned over the last two years, it's how to stay composed.

Whether its falling behind early or having to hang on to a lead late - two things the Cardinals experienced Tuesday night against Souhegan - Bishop Guertin has found a way to come out on top in some big contests early this season.

When the Sabers took a 3-0 lead less than five minutes in, the Cardinals came right back with a run of their own to get ahead and never let Souhegan get closer than a goal the rest of the way win an 11-8 win in Division I action at Stellos Stadium.

"I think everyone was able to work though those kinks," Bishop Guertin coach Kerry Gobiel said. "The most important thing with the girls is you have to stay composed even when you’re down. We were down a lot last year, so I think we’ve learned how to be OK with being down and just slowly chipping away."

Bishop Guertin (6-0) answered Souhegan's early run with a 5-0 run of its own that included two goals by Lindsay Hult, and when the Sabers cut the lead to one with under 15 minutes to play, Riley Bouvier answered less than a minute later to keep the Cardinals in front by a couple of scores.

Hult finished with four goals while Bouvier had two goals and two assists and Abigail Ahearn added two goals and an assist. Madison Keating, Amelia Piercy and Natalie Coutu also had a goal apiece for Bishop Guertin while goalie Makenna Reekie had nine saves, bouncing back from an early miscue to make some big stops down the stretch.

With Souhegan already up 2-0 and a manup, Reekie came out of the goal to try to clear the ball, but pressure from Abby Hawks led to a ground ball that was recovered by Clare Woodford.

Woodford found Savannah Behn by the open net and Behn easily scored to give the Sabers a 3-0 lead just 3:15 into the game.

Reekie didn't let the mistake get to her and made back-to-back saves on Souhegan's Hannah Rowe in the second half that helped keep Bishop Guertin in front.

"I could not be more proud of her," Gobiel said. "She made some big saves and everyone makes mistakes. It’s a mental game and for her to have that mental capacity to, after a tough error, to be able to go back and make big saves, is huge. She has a strong defense unit in front of her who are great leaders who can lift her up."

Behn, Rowe and Taylor Clark (assist) all finished with tow goals for Souhegan (4-1) while Hawkes and Woodford added a goal apiece and Alex LaBrosse made 12 saves.

"We played hard," Souhegan coach Maren Petropulos said. "This is our first hard game that we’ve had all season. I think our girls played well and we have some things to work on."

Both teams return to the field on Friday, as Souhegan heads to Exeter and Bishop Guertin visits Dover, with both game starting at 4 p.m.
