HUDSON - The Bishop Guertin High School girls lacrosse team scored with fourth-tenths of a second remaining in the first half to take an eight-goal lead into the break Monday against Hanover.

Good thing for the Cardinals, as they needed a lot of that cushion in the second half.

The Marauders made a run for it after halftime, twice cutting Bishop Guertin's lead to three goals with a chance to get it to two, but the Cardinals were able to generate enough offense down the stretch for an 18-13 win at Presentation of Mary Academy in Hudson.

It was a trio of freshmen who led the way for Bishop Guertin (7-0 in Division I), as Rylee Bouvier had four goals and three assists and Natalie Coutu had two goals and four assists while Makenna Reekie came up with some big stops in the second half to keep Hanover at a distance.

"It’s huge," Bishop Guertin coach Kerry Gobiel said of her team's ability to hang on for the win. "I think the girls did a great job persevering through as a team. It was a tougher game with ups and downs, it’s good."

Getting major contributions from the younger players on the roster has also become something of the norm for the Cardinals.

"I expected it," Gobiel said. "I’ve coached a lot of these girls since they were in fifth grade. A lot of these girls who have been playing club, they just have a higher level of lacrosse IQ since they’ve been doing it longer."

Emily Santom and Abigail Ahearn also had four goals each for Bishop Guertin while Lindsay Hult had two goals and two assists and Claire Donovan had a goal and an assist. Madison Keating chipped in with a goal and Allison O'Hara had an assist.

Hanover got a big game from Jasmine Lou and Maddie McCorkle, with each finishing with five goals. McCorkle, a junior who is verbally committed to play at Duke University, scored all of her goals in the second half and helped the Marauders turn things around on the draw.

"We had a discussion at halftime, we said we’re not playing how we practice," Hanover coach Chris Seibel said. "We’re doing things on the field that isn’t what we do in practice. We have a set offense that we have to get into and we had five turnovers early that led to five goals.

"We have to correct these things and the second half, I’ve never seen a kid play like Maddie McCorkle did. What she did on the draw, creating turnovers on defense, bringing the ball up, scoring. It was incredible. I think as the game goes on, it’s hard to hang with her because she’s got an incredible motor."

Jess Seibel added two goals for Hanover and Allie McCorkle also scored while Allison Lichtenstein made 11 saves.

The teams traded goals to open the second half before Hanover scored three straight over a span of 4:04 to cut the Cardinals' lead to 11-6\. The Marauders won the ensuing draw but turned the ball over and Coutu scored for Bishop Guertin to get the lead back to six, and Bouvier added another goal to make it 13-6 with 13:31 to play.

But Hanover battled right back, going on a 4-0 run in 4:02 to get within three, 13-10, with 8:56 to play. McCorkle controlled the draw, but a shot by Seibel hit the side of the net and the Cardinals regained possession.

Bishop Guertin put in two more goals less than a minute apart to go up 15-10, but goals by Lou and McCorkle just 90 seconds apart got Hanover within three again with 3:08 to play. The Marauders won another draw, but this time, Reekie came up with a save and the Cardinals went on a 3-0 run of their own in just 22 seconds to put the game away.

"That’s the most anyone has scored (against Bishop Guertin) so far," Gobiel said. "I think they did a really good job creating the one-on-ones. That’s tough against any really good player. They did a really good job with isolating and making sure the crease slide wasn’t there."

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday, as Hanover travels to Derry to face Pinkerton and Bishop Guertin heads to Merrimack, with both games starting at 4:30 p.m.
