Even though the Bishop Guertin High School girls lacrosse team may have a young roster, coach Kerry Gobiel feels good about the group's leadership.

As long as Katie Lupo is around, there isn't much for the Cardinals' coach to worry about.

Commitment and leadership have been at the forefront throughout the senior captain's high school career, and that doesn't seem likely to change any time soon.

"Anything she does, she puts it all in," Gobiel said. "She is a strong leader and people respect her. Katie is definitely very committed in everything that she does. She works hard, her grades are unbelievable."

After taking over the program as the head coach before the 2015 season, Gobiel decided each year she would name at least one junior captain. That way, during the offseason, the other girls would have someone else they could turn to with a question, or see as an example of how they should be preparing for the spring.

It was a position that Lupo had no problem filling.

"I knew how it was going to pan out," Lupo said. "It’s different to be the head dog of the team and having to run everything. I guess it’s a little bit of a jump, but not quite as big because of last year."

A starter since freshman year - the year the Cardinals won the title - Lupo has always been someone Gobiel could point to to show other players the way they were supposed to be doing things, even as a young player. Now, the coach is looking for her to not only do more than just lead by example, but become even more of a go-to player on the field.

"She’s always been that silent doer," Gobiel said. "She just works and does things. Now, it’s her turn. She knows it’s her turn. A lot of the younger girls will do the same thing.

"I think for her, it’s just changing her mindset. Instead of thinking about looking (for an open teammate), it’s think about looking and then go. She’s been able to do a pretty good job."

Lupo, who was also a captain for the Bishop Guertin field hockey team, started playing lacrosse in fourth grade, and when the time came to start thinking about college and getting recruited, she had a different idea.

"I was looking to get recruited, so I looked at Army because they had a brand new team," she said. "I was this close to getting recruited, but I liked Navy better, so I actually ended up there after getting recruited by Army.

"No one in my family has ever been in the military, so I’m the first one. I visited just for the heck of it when I was in Maryland, and I just loved it. It’s a huge deal. It’s such a long application process, I had to do so many interviews."

Lupo plans to try to walk-on at Navy, and considering the time that's gone by since the recruiting process started, Gobiel believes she'll be able to do it.

"I think she could and I think having gained more confidence," the coach said. "Her play from, when a school starts looking at her as a freshman, to where she is now, she could hang and put in some work there. I hope she does do that."

Whether Lupo continues her playing career in college or not, she already knows she's got the leadership skills to the ground running.

"I think that’s definitely going to help me," she said. "At Navy, they exemplify leadership so much and being a leader for two teams, I think I’ve got a head start."
