NASHUA - The Dover High School girls lacrosse team was able to get away with certain mistakes during its 10-game winning streak.

The Green Wave found out Monday night that that won't always be the case, especially against a team that's won the last four Division I championships.

Bishop Guertin took advantage of Dover's early miscues to jump out to a commanding lead in the first half and the Cardinals were able to hold off a late comeback for a 17-11 win at Nashua's Stellos Stadium.

"Our division has a wide variety of teams, and if you make a mistake against certain teams, they won’t capitalize on it," Dover coach Dana Gray said. "When you make a mistake here, they’re going to capitalize on it. I told them, I’m not expecting you to not make a mistake, but when you do, hustle back, so they can’t capitalize."

That wasn't the case early on, as the Cardinals (9-4, No. 3 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll) jumped out to a 4-0 lead and were up 10-4 at halftime. The Green Wave (11-2, No. 5) closed the gap in the second half, getting within four goals with just under 10 minutes to play before Bishop Guertin put the game away with a 4-2 run.

"The last few weeks, we’ve been talking about coming out and winning the first five or 10 minutes and really making sure that’s when we’re dialed in," Bishop Guertin coach Leslie Why said. "We start off on the right foot and I think we have the last few games. And we surged again toward the end, so it’s how do we bridge that middle part."

Tess Prunier had three goals and three assists to lead the Cardinals while Lauren Redfern had three goals and two assists and Kam Schmitt and Sklar Neftali each had three goals and an assist. Ari Kouchalakos also scored three times and Anna Campel had two goals.

Maddy Eder-Linell finished with just six saves, but two of them came in the first half on point-blank chances by Dover that could have changed momentum.

Julia Rowley and Abbie Kozlowski each had three goals and an assist for the Green Wave, as the pair combined for all four of Dover's goals in the first half.

"Abbie Kozlowski, her first couple of goals, snapped us out of it," Gray said. "We were stunned and she snapped us back into the game. And then we just needed to start winning the draw controls. Defense was awesome. They had a couple of breakdowns, but they’re so good, I don’t even need to coach them anymore."

Bishop Guertin scored three goals in stretch of 1:11 early in the second half to take its largest lead, 13-5, but the Cardinals would go more than 10 minutes without a goal.

Dover was able to control pace and possession after that, and started chipping away at the lead. Lily Hunt (two goals, one assist) scored with 12:44 remaining to make it 13-8, leading to a timeout by the Cardinals.

The Green Wave won the draw coming out of the break, and although they didn't score right away, they kept the ball in the Cardinals' end thanks to a successful ride.

Payton Denning scored her second goal of the game with 9:31 to play to make it 13-9, but Bishop Guertin controlled the ensuing draw and Kouchalakos scored a little more than a minute later.

That started a 4-0 run over the next 5:22 for the Cardinals, making it 17-9 with 3:03 remaining to put the game away.

"We did pull this out and we did dig deep," Why said. "We stayed in it. They did only have one loss. A W is a W. The scores don’t count when it comes to seedings and rankings. Sometimes it may not be the prettiest. You get there and you’ve got to be happy with getting there, too. That’s a team that’s a disrupter."
