NASHUA - There might be some new faces on the field for the Bishop Guertin High School girls lacrosse team, but one thing that's remained the same is the team's leadership.

The Cardinals needed all of that experience in Tuesday's Division I season-opener against Londonderry.

After falling behind by two goals with just over 12 minutes to play, Bishop Guertin's offense came alive - led by captains Kate Bradford and Olivia Koutsos - to score eight unanswered goals to beat the Lancers 14-8 at Stellos Stadium.

Bishop Guertin's Sydney Todd defends against Londonderry's Catie Derhak.

Koutsos and Bradford each finished with five goals and an assist, with Bradford collecting the 100th goal of her career in the opening minutes of the game. Emily Santom (assist) and Madison Cote also had two goals apiece for the Cardinals (1-0) while Abigail Hayhurst had an assist and Grace Young made eight saves.

"We are very good at being a second-half team," Bishop Guertin coach Kerry D'Ambroise said. "They know when they're down that they need to get back up and fight. It's winning the draw but it's also making those key saves when they do get the ball. Grace (Young) was able to make those solid saves and force defensive turnovers that helped us."

Londonderry (0-1) got four goals from Catie Derhak, who had all of the Lancers' tallies in the first half, while Erika Tsetsilas added a pair of scores. Shannon Fraser and Emily Holland also scored for Londonderry while Kaitlyn Merchanct made five saves.

Bishop Guertin jumped out to a 3-1 lead early on and could have had more. The Cardinals were able to control the draw in the first half, but weren't able to capitalize, and Derhak went to work, placing shots all over the back of the net.

"We told the girls all fall and all winter, never too high and never too low," Londonderry coach Scott Walden said. "That was the thing we kept saying to them and next thing we know, it's 4-4 at halftime.

"Our strength is going to be, and we didn't do as well as we should, whoever is doubling Catie, that offensive player has to see it and come to it. We didn't have that. Normally, we get Catie on a couple of goals early, they start to double, and then we get the good cutter. We would have got three or four more goals if we got that and we were all preseason."

After each team opened the second half with a goal, Londonderry scored twice in 36 seconds to take a 7-5 lead with 18:12 to play. That included a stretch of tough calls against the Cardinals, including a goal by Cote that was waved off for a dangerous play, and a free positioning for the Lancers where Young was out of the crease and had to leave the net open on the restart.

It was still a two-goal game when Tsetsilas scored her second to make it 8-6 with 12:14 remaining, but Bishop Guertin won the draw and Koutsos scored to make it a one-goal game.

The Cardinals won the next three draws and scored off all of them, netting four goals in a span of 1:18 to go up 10-8\. Londonderry won the next draw and had a chance to pull within one, but Young made a great save on a shot by Meghan Jackes.

But Jackes was able to tip Young's clearing attempt and Tsetsilas picked up the groundball, but her shot hit the side of the net and Young was able to scoop it up. Cote scored moments later at the other end and momentum was on Bishop Guertin's side.

"We ran out of gas at the end," Walden said. "As long as we come out of this with a good effort, we worked hard, did the right things, I'm going to be happy. Then we can go forward. If we struggle because we're not hustling and not being teammates, I'd feel different. This is what can get us going for the rest of the season."
