NASHUA - Despite all the schemes and game plans, basketball is a pretty simple game.

You've got to score points to win and the only way to do that is to shoot the ball. The Bishop Guertin High School girls basketball team shot it almost twice as often as Winnacunnet and it showed on the scoreboard.

The Cardinals built up a lead early Tuesday, went ahead by as many as 25 points and cruised to a 61-42 win over the Warriors in Division I action.

Bishop Guertin's Addison Smith blocks a shot by Winnacunnet's Jennifer Freedman.

Ten different players scored for Bishop Guertin (9-1), with freshman Addison Smith leading the way with 13 points. Also in double figures were Meghan Cramb with 12 points and Erin Carney with 11\. The Cardinals did a lot of their damage in transition, taking advantage of Winnacunnet (6-6) turnovers and missed shots to create fast-break opportunities.

"When we're playing well as a team, we're playing at a pretty good tempo," Bishop Guertin coach Brad Kreick said. "Getting up and down the floor and creating offense with our defense and our press. We have a team that I think is made for getting up and down the floor and playing at a pretty good pace. The more we can create that kind of tempo in a game, the better off we're going to be."

Emily Britton had a game-high 17 points to lead the Warriors and Jennifer Freedman added 13 points, as Winnacunnet fell for the fifth time in its last seven games.

The Warriors struggled at times with the Cardinals' press and didn't make their first field goal until 2:39 remained in the first quarter. But Winnacunnet was still in the game thanks to its free throw shooting.

"They took 81 shots to our 44," Winnacunnet coach Cassie Turcotte said. "That (free throw shooting) is what kept us in. Part of our game plan was to take it at them. We knew Bishop Guertin is very aggressive and you take it at them, the potential is there for the foul. That helped us out a lot in the first half. Our game plan was to keep doing it in the second half and we kind of let up."

Winnacunnet was 10 of 14 from the line in the first half, but finished 14 of 23 for the game.

A pair of free throws by Britton made it 16-8 Bishop Guertin 43.8 seconds left in the quarter, but two straight steals by Hannah Muchemore led to baskets by Smith and Carney in a span of eight seconds. Britton made two more free throws before the end of the quarter, but Smith hit a 3 and then made two layups to open the second and make it 27-10.

In all, Bishop Guertin's underclassmen - all freshmen - scored 31 points.

"Whether it's seniors, juniors, sophomores, freshmen, I think that the kids are built to try to get up and down the floor," Kreick said. "The freshmen are no exception."

Bishop Guertin's Elizabeth Croke knocks the ball away from Winnacunnet's Hannah Driscoll.

The Cardinals took a 35-20 lead into halftime, but a 3-pointer by Kaya Cadagan early in the third quarter made it 37-25 and seemed to give Winnacunnet some life.

But Molly Dee answered with a 3 for the Cardinals, starting them on a 12-3 run to end the quarter.

"You come out at halftime, you've got your game plan, everybody completely understands, and then they go on the floor and have to show back up," Turcotte said. "It takes them a while to get back into the game. about. Bishop Guertin is tough, they've got the best players in the state on their team."

Bishop Guertin led by as many as 25 points, 55-30, in the fourth quarter, before Winnacunnet was able to get closer down the stretch.

"We had spurts in the game where we did a very good job, but unfortunately, we had some chunks in the game where we let down a little bit," Kreick said. "We talked to the kids about how good teams learn how not to do that. They've got to keep coming all the time. Among other things, hopefully we'll take out of that game that you're living dangerously if you don't keep the pedal down all the time."
