It was still early in Tuesday's game but the Bishop Guertin High School girls basketball team had put some space on the scoreboard between itself and Winnacunnet.

The starting five for the Cardinals had given the team a comfortable, but not insurmountable, lead when coach Brad Kreick turned to his bench and made what amounted to a line change.

Out went four starters, mostly seniors, and in came four freshmen, not a move that many coaches would make in the first quarter of what at the moment was an eight-point game.

But this Bishop Guertin roster isn't like most, and with the kids leading the way, the Cardinals went on a 13-4 run to increase their lead to 29-12\. That stretch included two steals by freshman Hannah Muchemore that led to baskets, and seven straight points to open the second quarter by freshman Addison Smith.

That's how the Cardinals (9-1) played the rest of the game, mixing in seniors with sophomores and freshmen, and it's something they've been doing for most of the season.

"We made a decision as a staff at the beginning of the season, if we were going to go through growing pains with a talented group of freshmen, we'd just as soon go through it in the first month, so we get to the second half of the season and we don't think of them as freshmen any more," Kreick said. "They've got a dozen games under their belt and they've practiced with the other kids. We’re kind of age blind at this point."

It's helped the Cardinals put together an eight-game win streak since their only loss of the season to Bedford. That 57-49 setback came in the second game of the year, and Bishop Guertin avenged it with a 21-point win over the Bulldogs on Jan. 17.

At one point on Tuesday, Bishop Guertin led by as many as 25 points, and at times seemed to overwhelm Winnacunnet with its press.

"They're probably the best team in the state," Winnacunnet coach Cassie Turcotte said. "Not only does he have a talented and experienced starting lineup, he's got a deep bench. And they're mostly freshmen. He's got what every coach dreams of. He's got the depth. He's got the young (kids) on the bench who are mixing in with the seasoned players. They're getting trained just right."

Bishop Guertin still has some tough games left on the schedule, including Sunday's matchup with Trinity and games at Alvirne (8-0) and Pinkerton (7-1).

But outside of that loss to Bedford, the Cardinals are have had just two games decided by less than 20 points - Tuesday's win over the Warriors and a 46-27 win over LaSalle Academy, of Providence, which is one of the top teams in Rhode Island.

"The kids are getting better every day," Kreick said. "As we head into the second half of the season, we feel pretty good about where we are, but, the kids have to understand they have to show up every day. They've got to do the work. I feel good about their frame of mind."
