NASHUA -The Bishop Guertin High School football team scored two touchdowns on plays of 60-plus yards and took advantage of two short fields to score two more, as the Cardinals were able to hold off Portsmouth-Oyster River for a 24-19 win during Division I non-conference action at Stellos Stadium.

Dylan Santosuosso, who made his first varsity start at quarterback, threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, with both scoring throws going to Kyle Baker. Joey Lupo added another long touchdown, scoring on a 72-yard punt return in the second quarter to help the Cardinals (2-1) pick up their second win in a row.

Lupo also had two interceptions, including one that ended a ClipperCats' drive at the Bishop Guertin 7-yard line with 2:50 to play, and the senior also blocked an extra point.

"He’s going to impact the game in many ways," Bishop Guertin coach John Trisciani said of Lupo. "Dylan, we coached him up this week, and he was in a tough spot. He threw the ball well at times. He did a great job. He had his first varsity touchdowns."

A week after Lupo stepped in as the Cardinals' emergency quarterback and ran for over 180 yards and three touchdowns, Bishop Guertin had just 188 yards against Portsmouth-OR's defense. But the big plays on defense and special teams kept the Cardinals in front.

"We had a lot of success running the ball last week and not as much this week," Trisciani said. "We had some success in the return game because there wasn’t much success on offense. That defensive line is good, those linebackers are good, too."

The ClipperCats' defense allowed just 52 yards rushing and held Bishop Guertin to 48 yards in the first half.

Portsmouth-OR's Max Lalime led the offense, as he carried 19 times for 91 yards and three touchdowns, but left the game in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury. Quarterback Jacob Boutin was 9 of 18 for 139 yards and two interceptions while also rushing for 69 yards, as the ClipperCats had 341 yards on offense.

But the Cardinals were able to take a 12-0 lead early in the second quarter, after Lupo's first pick set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Santosuosso. Less than a minute into the second, Lupo field a punt at his own 28, broke a handful of tackles and raced down the near sideline to put Bishop Guertin up two scores.

"We gave them the first quarter and then we decided to play," Portsmouth-OR coach Brian Pafford said. "We made a couple of mental mistakes at the end. We can’t do that. If you want to be a playoff team, you can’t make mistakes down the stretch. We had a lot of kids who played well."

The ClipperCats answered the return with a 10-play, 74-yard drive that ended with a 5-yard touchdown run by Lalime. But Lupo came around the right side of the line to block the PAT to keep Bishop Guertin up 12-6.

With Portsmouth-OR kicking away from Lupo, Josef Homola returned the ensuing kickoff to the ClipperCats' 11-yard line, and two plays later, Santosuosso hit Baker (five catches for 85 yards) for a 7-yard touchdown to make it 18-6.

The ClipperCats answered again, this time with a 13-play, 67-yard drive and made it a two-score game on a 2-yard run by Lalime. After a fumble by Lupo on Bishop Guertin's first play, Portsmouth-OR got the ball back at the Cardinals' 14-yard line with 11 seconds left in the half.

But Boutin was called for intentional grounding on first down, moving the ball back to the 30-yard line, and the ClipperCats were unable to take advantage before the end of the half.

"We were on defense for a lot of that game and some of those kids were dying," Trisciani said. "You’re pleading with them to keep fighting. We’ve got all day (Sunday) to give them off."

Portsmouth-OR took the lead on the opening drive of the second half, going 64 yards in eight plays, aided by a 39-yard completion from Boutin to Trevor Nelson and Bishop Guertin penalties for a personal foul and pass interference. Lalime capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 19-18 ClippersCats with 8:10 left in the third.

The lead didn't last long. Three plays later, Santosuosso hit Baker for a 62-yard touchdown and the Cardinals went back in front, 24-19.

The ClipperCats looked like they would answer, as they marched 83 yards in 14 plays to face a fourth-and-2 at the Cardinals' 3\. But Boutin could only pick up a yard and Bishop Guertin took over on downs.

Portsmouth-OR was unable to pick up another fourth down on its next drive, turning the ball over at the Cardinals' 35\. The ClipperCats got one more chance when Lupo lost a fumble at the Bishop Guertin 36, but he made up for the turnover with his second interception.

"Even when we were up, I knew it would be a long second half," Trisciani said. "Sure enough, they came out on the first drive. It was tough. You’re trying to play the clock game, too. We did just enough to win."
