Bishop Guertin's J.T. Hiscoe throws a pass during a scrimmage against Merrimack.

Speed isn't limited to how fast a player can run on the field, but also how fast a football team can line up and run a play.

Jeff Moore wants his Bishop Guertin High School team to do the later on both sides of the ball. The first-year Cardinals coach saw the offense do it in last Friday's scrimmage against Merrimack, but the defense was a step behind.

"We're playing fast offensively but we've got to play faster defensively," Moore said. "It's been a huge learning curve and it's changing day to day. At this point, they're still little confused on some things because all three phases of the game are new, with totally different philosophies and schemes."

Moore's style of coaching matches his personality - high-energy - and he wants to see his players perform that way on the field. The faster they can go, the more of an advantage they can have.

"They know I'm a high-energy guy," he said. "I want them to be high energy. We want to be a tempo team and we want to be passionate in everything we do. That's rubbing off on them."

The Cardinals' offense, led by quarterback J.T. Hiscoe, looked like it was in mid-season form against Merrimack, finding the end zone four times during the scrimmage. A fifth drive ended on a fourth-down pass to Nick Lorden in the end zone that was ruled to be complete out of bounds. Lorden also took a screen pass from Hiscoe 80 yards for a touchdown.

"I thought our quarterbacks played well," Moore said. "I like our backs. We're in the learning process with our offensive line. It's a different scheme there and we're trying to find the right mix of about eight guys. I like what's going on there. We're moving the ball.

"We've got to play better defense in order to be successful. I'm not saying we have to stop them on every down, but we've got to be better defensively."
