MANCHESTER - If the Bishop Guertin High School football team is able to take advantage of its greatest asset - team speed - the Cardinals could be on their way back to the postseason.

That speed is what helped Bishop Guertin dominate all three phases of the game during Friday's scrimmage against Manchester Central in the Queen City Jamboree. The Cardinals shut out the Little Green 27-0.

The offense moved the ball up and down the field against the Little Green, getting touchdown runs from Kelvin Rivera and Jackson Housman, while quarterback J.T. Hiscoe connected with Matt Theriault for a score. The defense kept Central on its side of midfield for most of the night and got a touchdown from Chase Hughes, who returned a fumble 42 yards for a score. Hughes was also 3 for 4 on extra points.

"We did a great job just coming out and executing," Bishop Guertin coach Travis Cote said. "We had a good week of practice and we just told the kids to come out and play hard. We got everybody involved as much as we could and they just did a good job. They were excited to play and played with some emotion and intensity, which we need to do, so it was good to see."

The biggest improvement Cote saw was in the team's tackling, calling it an "issue" in other scrimmages. And that the Cardinals were able to take advantage of their speed against a bigger Central team was encouraging.

"We're not real big," he said. "We have a lot of good athletes and guys that can contribute. I think, overall, we have very good team speed and we've got be able to utilize that. Probably better (than last season) as a whole, but we don't have those top end guys. We've got a lot of guys who are quick."

Hiscoe spent most the scrimmage at quarterback, giving way to Kyle Cussion after the Cardinals had taken a four-score lead with 7:16 left in the second quarter. As to which one would start Friday's season opener at Londonderry, Cote wasn't sure.

"We'll have to see what happens this week," he said. "Kyle is doing a lot of other stuff for us, so if we can rest him on offense and use him at receiver, that’s an advantage. They've both done a good job and they have different strengths."

The Cardinals kickoff the regular season at 7 p.m. Friday at Londonderry.
