NASHUA - For the last 10 days, the Bishop Guertin High School field hockey team has found ways to keep things rolling in its direction.

Despite falling behind in the first quarter Tuesday against Exeter, the Cardinals were able to do it again.

Taylor Guibord scored two of her three goals in the second quarter to help Bishop Guertin erase an early deficit and the Cardinals kept up the pressure offensively on the way to a 4-1 win over the Blue Hawks in a Division I game at Stellos Stadium.

Addison Daddona also had a goal, with Guibord registering an assist on it, while Skylar Naftali and Maddie Harrington each added an assist. Ayla Saeturn made seven saves, with a handful of them coming in succession in the third quarter, to keep it a 2-1 lead for Bishop Guertin (8-2, No. 5 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll).

"Everybody felt the weight of this game," Bishop Guertin coach Dakota Bilodeau said. "They’re a great program every single year and we knew we had to bring our best. We turned it on and got the job done against a really good program."

Emma Mohns put Exeter (7-3, No. 4) up 1-0 with 4:40 left in the first quarter and MarLie Macek made eight saves for the two-time defending champion Blue Hawks.

But despite that early deficit, the Cardinals didn't panic. In fact, it was the third time in four games they've fallen behind early.

"Using it as motivation instead of getting down," Guibord said. "We knew that we could beat them, we just had to come with energy. The same thing happened last week, when (Concord and Londonderry) scored on us first, and then we came back with six. Definitely staying motivated and winning those 50-50 balls and keeping the energy up."

The comeback started right at the start of the second quarter, with Guibord tying the game just 1:28 into the frame. Exeter responded with a pair of penalty corners, but couldn't capitalize.

Then, in the final six minutes of the second, Hailey LeBlanc had an great chance for Bishop Guertin, but Macek came up with a pair of saves. The second rebound came out right to Guibord, who put the ball in the cage for a 2-1 lead with 5:32 to go until halftime.

The Blue Hawks had their best chance to tie the game early in the third, but Saeturn was able to turn it away with a couple of saves, including one off the pad on her left hand.

Moments later, Daddona scored off an assist from Guibord to make it 3-1 with 5:56 to play in the third.

"I think it’s because we have a really athletic team and we know how to respond in those situations," Guibord said of the Cardinals scoring in transition. "We use our speed, because we are super quick, and I feel like we usually score more in situations like that than corners. It’s because we have good spatial awareness, we all know where to put the ball, and we all connect very well."

Bishop Guertin almost got another goal early in the fourth, but Macek was able to make back-to-back saves to keep the ball out. The Cardinals were finally able to get the fourth goal off a corner, with Guibord sending the ball into the left side of the net to make it 4-1 with 6:55 left.

"This team knows how to bounce back," Bilodeau said. "We’re big energy people, so we stay even keeled. This group is gritty. They’ll grind and dig as deep as they have to. I’m just really proud of the effort."
