Bishop Guertin comes back to beat Spaulding, advance to D1 boys basketball final

Steven Toscano scored 19 points and Jeff Lunn had a double double to help lead the Bishop Guertin High School boys basketball team to a 55-53 win Tuesday over Spaulding in the Division I semifinals.

Toscano was 11 of 14 from the free throw line while Lunn added 12 points and 11 boards and Kyle Gavin had 10 points, as the No. 7 Cardinals (16-5) advanced to the title game for the second time in three years. For the No. 3 Red Raiders (17-4), its the second year in a row they've lost in the semifinals.

After the Cardinals got off to a good start, Spaulding went on a 17-0 run in the first half to take a 13-point lead into halftime. But Bishop Guertin stormed back, holding Spaulding to just three points in the third quarter to close within one at the end of the frame.

The Raiders were able to hold the lead for most of the fourth quarter, but with 2.9 seconds left and the game tied at 53, Lunn was fouled and made both free throws to give the Cardinals the lead. After a couple of Spaulding timeouts, Nick MacGregor's 3-pointer at the buzzer was no good.

MacGregor finished with 11 points and eight rebounds while Dominic Paradis had 14 points for Spaulding.

Bishop Guertin will now take on No. 1 Trinity for the Division I title at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the University of New Hampshire.
