NASHUA - There was a lot of time, and a lot of things, for the Bishop Guertin High School boys lacrosse team to think about over the last week.

With no games between the Cardinals' loss to Pinkerton Academy and Monday's game against Exeter, there was plenty of time to practice, and they sure needed it.

Replacing two seniors, who were All-Americans a year ago, doesn't happen overnight, but that was what Bishop Guertin was tasked with doing when Cam Hayden and Owen King both went down with injuries in a four-day span.

“You lose two All-Americans, it’s going to take a little bit of time to adjust,” Bishop Guertin coach Brian Cameron said. “The next day (after King’s injury), we had Staples, so we didn’t have much time, and we didn’t practice on Mother’s Day (before Pinkerton).

"After that, we had a full week to prepare. We’re going to have to play a little bit different. It’s going to look a little bit different, but I thought we played how we wanted to (on Monday).”

Even with a full week to practice with new players in new spots, it took the Cardinals a little bit to get going against Exeter. But after taking a 2-1 lead after one quarter, Bishop Guertin outscored the Blue Hawks 9-1 over the next 24 minutes on the way to a 13-5 win at Rivier University.

Jack Redfern had five goals and an assist and Drew Redfern scored four times to lead the Cardinals (9-4, No. 2 in the New Hampshire Orthopaedic Center/NHHSSports Coaches Poll). Jackson Warren also had two goals and Hudson Schmitt added four assists.

“We’ve got to kind of figure out the offense in a different way,” Schmitt said. “I feel like this game, and the past week we’ve had of just practicing with no games, I think that we really figured out our offense. The guys stepped up and we got some goals on the board.”

It wasn't perfect, but it was a good first step for a team that still has a few more tough tests before the end of the regular season. After playing at Keene-Monadnock (3-8) on Wednesday, Bishop Guertin goes to Boston College High (10-4) on Thursday and returns to Stellos Stadium on Saturday to face Westwood's Xaverian Brothers (6-10).

“It’s still a work in progress, but I thought we moved the ball,” Cameron said. “We had a lot more passes. We were a lot more patient and we were playing faster, even though we were slower to take shots.”

While Jack Redfern, a sophomore, has been a steady prescence in the offense all season, part of the focus on Monday was to get senior Drew Redfern more involved, and that paid off for both brothers.

“Jack is having an All-American type of season,” Cameron said. “With Drew’s athleticism, that was an area where we could get more out of him. So we’re really looking to use his athleticism coming off picks to free him up more.”

Jack Redfern had Bishop Guertin's first three goals of the game, getting the Cardinals a 3-1 lead before Warren scored on the manup to make it 4-1.

But the ensuing faceoff turned into a scrum around the ball, as Exeter's Jackson Loranger continued to push the ball down the field. Bishop Guertin goalie Jonah Feliciano came out to try to the play it, but an odd bounce left Loranger with the groundball and a wide-open net, and he scored just 12 seconds later to make it 4-2.

Warren answered just 46 seconds later for the Cardinals and the Blue Hawks (10-4, No. 4) wouldn't score again until the fourth quarter.

Loranger's hustle on the goal, and his overall play, which included taking faceoffs for most of the day, stood out to Exeter coach Matt Brewster.

“He had a great game,” Brewster said. “We asked him to do a lot just because he’s a senior captain. We need him to take faceoffs and also play on defense. He’s an athlete and a competitor and those are the two most important things to me right now, that the kids are competitive and they care.”

The two teams will play again before the end of the regular season, with Bishop Guertin going to Exeter on May 28.

“The next one is at home for us,” Brewster said. “We’ve got some guys that are a little younger, and when you play in situations like this, sometimes that comes out.”
