NASHUA - There are a lot of things that go into winning a lacrosse game, but faceoffs and groundballs are two of the most important.

For long stretches Thursday night, the Bishop Guertin High School boys lacrosse team was the one controlling both, and despite it's best efforts, Bedford struggled to stay close.

The Bulldogs were able to do so for most of the first half, but then the Cardinals started to pull away.

Bishop Guertin won every faceoffs in the first half and got the greater share of the groundballs, and thanks in part of a 5-0 run in the second quarter, the Cardinals were able to beat Bedford 15-6 in Division I action at Stellos Stadium.

Brian Cameron had three goals and five assists and Sean Cameron had three goals and an assist to lead Bishop Guertin (15-0) while Brennan McInnis (two assists), Drew Hailey and Cam Fagan added two goals each. Sam Prunier (two assists), Eric Poublon and Peyton Fisher also scored and James Heitmiller made nine saves.

"I thought defensively we were outstanding," Bishop Guertin coach Chris Cameron said. "Ryan Flynn and Doug Barker were forcing turnovers. We faced off well. There was one burst where we scored a few quick goals, but other than that spurt, we just grinded it out.

The Cardinals got a big game from Luke Romanek, Zac Keenan and Steve Bouchard, who combined to win 17 of 23 faceoffs, including all 13 in the first half.

"I thought we gave a pretty good effort," Bedford coach Matt Guerard said. "The score wouldn’t kind of give that definition, but we battled hard all over the field. For us, it came down to faceoffs and groundballs. We just weren’t successful in either area all night long. You can’t win against any team if those two things don’t go your way and they didn’t. We dug ourselves a hole."

Bedford (9-6) got a goal and an assist from Gannon Lowrie while Kyle Fink, Eric Flynn, Devin LaFrance, Brian Barlotta and John Cusack had a goal apiece. Dawson Clark added an assist and Luke Bole made 14 saves.

Flynn got Bedford on the board early, as he scooped up a groundball in transition and beat Heitmiller for a 1-0 lead with 9:37 left in the first quarter. Bishop Guertin had a few chances before and after the goal, but the Bulldogs' defense was able to rise to the challenge until McInnis tied the game with 7:48 remaining in the frame.

The Cardinals took the lead in the final seconds of the first, as Hailey scored seconds after Bedford's Demetri Anagnost received a two-minute, locked-in penalty for a hit to the head. The goal made it 2-1 going into the second, but the Bulldogs were able to kill off the remainder of the penalty to keep it a one-goal game.

But Prunier made it 3-1 not long after the man-up ended and Bishop Guertin started to dominate possession. Fagan got his first goal of the day with 7:47 left in the second quarter, starting a run that saw the Cardinals score five goals in a span of 2:16 to take an 8-1 lead.

"Bedford came out with a lot of energy," Chris Cameron said. "They played really good defense. As always, we’ve got to figure out how they’re defending. Our offensive coordinator, Cody Marquis, made a nice adjustment, and that’s when the flood gates opened up. You’ve always got to recognize when the double (team) comes because something is going to be open, and we adjusted to that."

The Bulldogs were able to get a little momentum back late in the half, getting goals from Lowrie and Fink just 58 seconds apart to make it 8-3\. But Sean Cameron scored with 52.4 seconds remaining to get the lead to 9-3 for Bishop Guertin at the break.

"For us, the first 14 minutes of the game were awesome," Guerard said. "We played great. Our defense was locked in and we’re following our scheme and we kind of fell apart a little bit in that second quarter defensively."

Brian Cameron started the scoring in the third quarter just 52 seconds in and McInnis tacked on another two minutes after that to make it 11-3\. The Cardinals led 14-3 going into the fourth, and despite two goals from Bedford in the first minute of the quarter, were able to hold on for the win.

"They didn’t go away," Chris Cameron said. "We didn’t give them much on offense at all. After the slow start, it was consistent."
