NEEDHAM, Mass. - There are always things for a high school coach to worry about.

For Chris Cameron, one thing he can cross off that list is his team's offense.

The Bishop Guertin High School boys lacrosse team scored almost every time it had the ball in the first half Tuesday night and the Cardinals' defense stepped up when it needed to in a 16-9 win over Needham at Memorial Park.

Brian Cameron had five goals and seven assists to lead Bishop Guertin (3-0) while Drew Hailey (two assists) and Sean Cameron (one assist) each added three goals. Eight different players scored for the Cardinals, as they led 7-1 at the end of the first quarter and led by as 11 goals in the first half.

"I was not expecting that," Chris Cameron said. "That was one of the best halves of lacrosse that we’ve played. They tried to play Brian straight-up in the first quarter and then they had to go to a zone because they didn’t know to react. Then we picked apart the zone with unselfish play. In the first half, we shot the lights out."

Sam Prunier added a goal and two assists and Brennan McInnins had a goal and an assist while Kyle Fisher, Ben Abladian and Alex Koutsos also had a goal apiece. James Heitmiller made 11 saves, including three in a row from in front of the crease early in the second quarter that keep Needham from gaining momentum.

"Their goalie played well," Needham coach Dave Wainwright said. "It was like someone stepped on our throat. It was a killer for us. It was a wave of momentum we had going for us and we felt like we had established a rhythm. For us to come away with no points, it sunk us a little bit. They went on another run on us."

The Rockets (3-2) were able to maintain possession for most of the first seven minutes of the second quarter thanks to three Bishop Guertin penalties, but were unable to come away with anything. During that stretch, the Cardinals had the possession in Needham's end for just 11 seconds and were able to get a goal from Hailey that made it 8-1.

McInnis added a transition goal with five minutes to go in the half that made it 9-1 and started a run of four goals in 3:52 for the Cardinals that bumped the lead to 12-1\. Needham got two goals in the final minute - sandwiched around a goal by Sean Cameron - to make it 13-3 at halftime.

"In the second quarter, penalties derailed us," Chris Cameron said. "You go on the road, you’ve got to play through some of those calls, and we did a good job of that. (Heitmiller) was like a hockey goalie, making saves everywhere. Overall, the defense was excellent."

Bishop Guertin was able to hold Needham's Jason Child in check in the first half, as he had three of his four goals in the fourth quarter. Brendan Walsh added two goals and two assists and Danny McEvoy and John Andre also had a goal apiece. Andrew McNally finished with seven saves.

The Cardinals return to Stellos Stadium on Thursday, where they will face Nashua North at 6 p.m.
