DUXBURY, Mass. - A three-hour bus ride seemingly had no impact on the Bishop Guertin High School boys lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon.

The Cardinals got caught in heavy traffic on their southbound trip to Duxbury High School in Duxbury, Mass. It resulted in a 25-minute delay in the start time and despite this disadvantage, the Cardinals (14-2) battled for nearly 56 minutes and came out the victor of their 9-8 bout with the Duxbury Dragons (14-5) in double overtime.

With the game tied at eight apiece and the second overtime coming to a close, the Cardinals had one last chance to put up a goal before the period expired. In traffic, midfielder Drew Hailey capitalized.

Hailey received a pass from Joey Lupo out in front of the net, charged forward, and with three men on him, he threw in his team's game-winning goal.

"It felt amazing," HaiIey said, of his game-winning score. "I don't think I've ever been in a game that intense. The intensity helped me take it to the net like that since I could feel it.

"I knew guys were gonna collapse on me so I knew I just had to throw it in quick."

The Cardinals have played the Dragons in each of the past 11 years; the Dragons won the first nine bouts, but the Cardinals have won the last two now.

"They've had our number for years and years," Cardinals coach Chris Cameron said. "We came out, we were playing well, then they started adjusting. I think they were playing doubles at our attack. We were finding guys. That was just a game of attrition. Once we hit overtime, that one could've gone either way, but that (would have been) one of the worst losses in my coaching career."

Albeit they initially fell behind 1-0, the Cardinals did not take long to respond. Unlike the Dragons, who often circled around the net, taking their time with many passes before they took what they thought was the ideal shot, the Cardinals were more aggressive - both offensively and defensively - and it worked out well for them.

With about three minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Dragons goalkeeper ran out of net with the ball to try to give his team strong field position. Instead, he lost control of it, which gave attacker Sam Prunier a chance to pick it up, dash towards an unguarded net and tie the game at one apiece.

Just 11 seconds later, the Cardinals took the lead. Winning the opening faceoff, they wasted no time as attacker Brian Cameron launched in a score on a one-timer, putting his team up 2-1.

It was the first of Cameron's three straight goals on the Cardinals 4-0 run. His next one came about a minute later on a wraparound and 1:23 into the second quarter, he tomahawked one in from the left side, putting his team up 4-1.

Chris Cameron said his goalkeeper Colin Casey and defensemen Doug Barker and Ryan Flynn played helped keep the team in the game. He also credited long stick middies Kyle Fisher and Henry Boyle, as well as short stick middies Joey Lupo and Jared Zeichick for playing well in the win.

"We played a lot of guys," Cameron said. "I don't think they played as many, but they were tough. It was a team effort."

Bishop Guertin finishes its regular season Thursday at home against Concord.
