LONDONDERRY – The Londonderry High School boys lacrosse team couldn’t have been much happier with how the first quarter of Thursday’s game against Bishop Guertin had gone.

But like all good teams, the Cardinals made adjustments.

After scoring just two goals in the game’s first 12 minutes, Bishop Guertin scored four times in the first four-plus minutes of the second quarter and led 8-2 at halftime on the way to a 13-4 victory over the Lancers.

Connor Donahue led the way for the Cardinals (11-3) with a goal and five assists, while Tom Hurley had three goals and Alex Astarita added two goals and an assist.

Londonderry (7-5) played a zone defense for most of the game, neutralizing the Cardinals’ offense. Bishop Guertin won most of the faceoffs and maintained possession for long stretches, but that kept the Cardinals from getting their transition game going.

“We won faceoffs, we rode really hard, we had the ball all day long,” Bishop Guertin coach Chris Cameron said. “They knew that man-to-man was not a matchup for them against us. They went to the zone and it definitely slowed us down some.

“We made an adjustment to their zone (going into the second quarter). We switched our offensive set. It’s tough when you have the ball all day to get any transition going. You have the ball so you can’t get any transition. I think we were able to get a little transition going as well as adjusting our offense.”

The Cardinals got goals from Astarita, Dom St. Laurent, John Miller and Tim Hinrichs to open the quarter, and after Dillan McKay got the Lancers on the board, Hurley tacked on two more scores to make it a seven-goal lead.

“They have a high-powered offense and at times we did a really good job,” Londonderry coach Joe McCune said. “We tried to get our guys to execute something a little different so at least they aren’t looking at the same exact slide package, or the same exact movements of our defense every time. If you keep doing the same things, and they keep exploiting it, it’s not a good recipe.”

While the Londonderry zone slowed the game – and Bishop Guertin’s offense – goalie Chris Gersh kept the game from getting out of hand. The Lancers keeper made 19 saves, including several in the second half.

“We were very pleased with him,” McCune said. “He was patient with the clear and didn’t throw the ball away in that regards. He was very cool-headed. (Thirteen goals) seems like a lot, but I’m happy with Chris’s effort.”

Paul Callahan and Jake Sonberg combined for six saves for the Cardinals. Gage Sovigny, Charlie O’Brien, Mitch Burke and Johnny Karanasois also scored goals for the Cardinals.

Londonderry got a goal and two assists from Nick Yennaco while Devin Burnet and Ted Tharrington also scored for the Lancers.

Bishop Guertin returns to the field Tuesday when it hosts Souhegan (6-4), while Londonderry has two tough games against Andover, Mass., (8-3) on Monday and at Pinkerton (12-1) on Thursday.
