Leading by just a goal at halftime, No. 1 Bishop Guertin outscored No. 5 Souhegan 9-0 in the third quarter and held off the Sabers in the fourth for a 19-12 win in the Division I semifinals at Stellos Stadium. The win sends the Cardinals to the championship game for the 11th year in a row, where they'll look to win their sixth straight title Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against No. 3 Pinkerton at Bill Ball Stadium in Exeter. Bishop Guertin scored three goals in the first 3:02 of the third quarter, won seven of the eight faceoffs in the quarter and added two more goals in the final minute to take a 17-7 lead after three. The spurt erased what had been a lackluster first half for the Cardinals (17-2), who had a 7-3 lead early in the second, but saw Souhegan (13-5) cut it to 8-7 by halftime. "We just kind of were going through the motions a little bit," Bishop Guertin coach Chris Cameron said. "I thought offensively, I think we were doing well. We were on pace for a 20-goal game and then the last five minutes (of the first half) we stopped playing. "We played in spurts. We let them hang around and they started believing. They're a talented team, but they don't have the talent or the depth we have, but they have guys who can scrap. They're a well-coached team and they play with fire. They weren't going away and the longer you let a team hang around, that's what will happen." During Bishop Guertin's 18-10 win over Souhegan during the regular season, the Cardinals jumped out to a 7-0 lead, and Bishop expected to see more of that in the third quarter. "The first half was great and we knew they were going to come out and play the most angry game of their lives because they don’t like to be that close," he said. "If we want to win this game and play for a championship Saturday, we’re going to have to play twice as good as them because they’re going to come out like a scary team. "We gave it everything we had, but that third quarter, we just couldn’t get a stop defensively. Our slides were late, our goalie’s stick was in the wrong spot, and it was just a bunch of small things and it hurt." Alex Astarita led the Cardinals with five goals and two assists while Gage Sevigny and Charlie O’Brien each had three goals and an assist. Mike Carluccio also had three goals and Nick Pruner (assist) and Jordan Caito had two goals each while Tim Hinrichs also scored. Souhegan got five goals from Joe Nutting and four from Brendan Cray while Trevor Barrett had two goals and two assists. Souhegan took a 3-2 lead midway through the first quarter, but Bishop Guertin went on a 5-0 run, going up 7-3 on a goal by Prunier with 9:10 left until halftime. Barrett scored to get the Sabers back within three, but Astarita answered 34 seconds later to make it 8-4. Then the Souhegan defense, led by Burnley, started making stops and got the ball out in transition. The Sabers closed the half on a 3-0 run and trailed 8-7 at the break. "These guys weren't intimidated by us," Cameron said of Souhegan. "They came out and had all the confidence in the world and played hard. What is a theme for us is not playing 48 minutes. We've been a fast-starting team in a lot of games, but we need to play 48 minutes." The fast start came in the second half and by the end of the third quarter, the Cardinals had a 17-7 lead and plenty of breathing room. It turned out they needed it. Cray and Nutting scored in the first two minutes of the fourth and Nutting added another goal with 7:17 left to make it 17-10\. Bishop Guertin would get the lead back to nine, but not until Caito scored with 3:57 left, and Souhegan added two more goals before the final buzzer. The 12 goals allowed were the most by Bishop Guertin this season, and just the fourth time a team has scored double digits against the Cardinals. Souhegan, which did it twice, is the only New Hampshire team this season to score 10 or more against Bishop Guertin. "We scored a legit 12 goals on their starters," Bishop said. "Not a lot of programs can say that. We're very young and it was good to see us come back and battle." For the third year in a row - and the seventh time overall - the Cardinals will meet Pinkerton in the final. "We've faced each other a lot and we've had the better of those matchups," Cameron said. "If we play the way we did and Pinkerton plays the way it did (Wednesday), I don't like our chances. We'll have to play a lot better."
