NEEDHAM, Mass. - There was only one thing the Bishop Guertin High School boys lacrosse team tried to do in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's game against Needham.

All the Cardinals wanted to do was hang on.

Up by a goal early in the fourth, Bishop Guertin tried to take some heat off its tired defense by possessing the ball, and despite a few turnovers, the Cardinals were able to do so for a 9-8 win over the Rockets.

Tim Hinrichs led Bishop Guertin (5-0) with four goals, but the Cardinals were shut out in the final quarter-plus and needed some strong play from their defense to get the victory.

"We stole a game," Bishop Guertin coach Chris Cameron said. "We got outplayed. We were so uncharacteristic. We just kept turning it over and not giving us a chance to play offense. Defensively, we had to grind it out and that's what we did. I don’t know what the time of possession was, but it had to be heavily slanted in their favor. The defense was so tired."

The Cardinals also got a goal each from Garret Bozek, Charlie O'Brien, Jordan Caito, Nick Prunier and Jack McNallen.

It was Hinrichs who got the Cardinals off to a fast start, scoring in the first minute of the game on the way to giving Bishop Guertin a 2-0 lead early in the first quarter. Bozek added a goal in the first and Hinrichs scored to open the second to give the Cardinals a 4-1 lead.

"They played tentative out of the gate, but they did a nice job overall," Needham coach Dave Wainwright said. "We're learning that these guys are definitely resilient."

The Rockets closed the gap to two goals on a score by Danny McEvoy (two goals) but Caito scored with 22 seconds left in the half to give Bishop Guertin a 5-2 lead at the break.

Needham was able to get back within two, 6-4, midway through the third quarter, but the Cardinals answered right away, as McNallen won the faceoff, raced down the field and beat goalie Ryan Christenson to make it 7-4.

The Rockets won the ensuing faceoff, but Bishop Guertin goalie Colin Casey made a save and started the break, hitting Hinrichs with a pass near midfield. The senior turned and found Prunier going to the goal, and he beat Christenson to make it 8-4.

"That was big," Cameron said. "(But) we just couldn't put them away. They have some good shooters on that team. They didn't have guys who created mismatches that we had to slide to, so we were fine that way. They run a lot of funky stuff, like off-ball cuts and screens. They got us that way."

Alec McLeod (three goals) scored a few minutes later to start Needham on a 3-0 run that pulled it within one, 8-7, but O'Brien put the Cardinals back up by two going into the fourth quarter.

"We started to identify some of their talent a little more and started to figure out what they're strengths and weaknesses are," Wainwright said. "That's what improved our play. The kids never let down and we kept our intensity up."

The Rockets had couple of opportunities to tie the game in the fourth, but the Cardinals' defense held, forcing five turnovers, including two in the final two minutes.

"We got hit with a lot of things (Tuesday)," Cameron said. "These guys grind it out. This is what you learn from a game like this. You learn a lot and this game will make us better down the road."
