PROVIDENCE – The Bishop Guertin High School boys lacrosse team did enough during the first quarter of Saturday’s game at La Salle Academy of Providence that the Cardinals could have had a lead.

But despite dominating possession and putting a number of shots on goal, Bishop Guertin found itself trailing for most of the game. Although the Cardinals made a furious comeback, they suffered their first loss of the season, falling 14-13 to the Rams.

La Salle goaltender Matt Andrews came up with 21 saves, most of which were in the first half, when Bishop Guertin was getting opportunities to score, but was unable to capitalize.

“Any time a kid makes 21 saves ... we didn’t shoot the ball well,” Bishop Guertin coach Chris Cameron said. “Our attack did not play what they are capable. Their defense was not at the level of others that we’ve played. They started aiming for corners and started missing.

“We did a lot of great things, but we didn’t save the ball well and we didn’t shoot the ball well. That’s why we lost. You turn that around and you win that game by seven or eight goals.”

La Salle led by five midway through the third quarter, and was still up three with 1:15 to go, but the Cardinals (10-1) cut the lead to two on a goal by Connor Donahue with 34 seconds to play. Bishop Guertin won the ensuing faceoff and got a couple of shots off, but the first two missed the mark and the third Andrews was able to stop.

But the goalie’s clearing attempt was batted down by John Miller and the Bishop Guerin senior scooped up the loose ball and scored on the empty net to make it a one-goal game with 12.4 seconds left.

The Cardinals again won the draw and Nick Prunier found Donahue in front of the goal for a final shot, but the pass was off the mark and time ran out.

“It’s always a one-goal game,” La Salle coach Steve O’Donnell said. “You ride high, you’re undefeated, and from (Cameron’s) perspective, he probably doesn’t think they played well. I thought they played well.”

Bishop Guertin got four goals and two assists from Dom St. Laurent and Miller had three goals and two assists. Donahue (two assists) and Charlie O’Brien each had two goals and Prunier and Tom Hurley had a goal and two assists each.

But goalies Jake Sonberg and Colin Casey combined to make just three saves, as the Rams outscored the Cardinals 6-2 over a nine-minute stretch that spanned the second and third quarters.

“That’s one of the worst (games) I’ve seen our team play in a while,” Cameron said. “Their goalie played really well early. Where we were down 4-2, we could have been up 6-2 but we made no saves.

“We’ve been focusing on little things, mental mistakes, and it doesn’t matter when you win big. But in games like this is when it burns you. It’s also the intensity. I knew they were flat before the game. I could just tell and it was disappointing. All of a sudden, we were down 12-8 and our guys woke up. We were still in the game and it gave us an opportunity.”

The Cardinals were able to hang around, but every time it seemed like they might go on a run, La Salle put in another goal. Bishop Gueritn scored twice to open the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 12-10 with 9:45 left, but the Rams pushed the lead back to three just 41 seconds later.

Donahue scored with 4:11 remaining, making it 13-11, and the Cardinals won the draw but turned the ball over. Joe Manown (six goals, two assists) scored what ended up being the dagger, making it 14-11 with 1:15 to play.

“If we play another quarter, we were wearing them down,” Cameron said. “We got to their goalie. Their goalie made 21 saves and we scored 13 goalies. I’ve never heard about that. Usually, 21 saves, you score eight. We didn’t quit. We gave ourselves a chance to win.”
