DERRY - The Bishop Guertin High School boys lacrosse team was seeing red Thursday and it wasn't just because the Cardinals were squaring off against Pinkerton Academy.

Coming off a frustrating loss, Bishop Guertin coach Chris Cameron challenged his players to step up their game, and with a trip to visit their biggest rival up next, the Cardinals answered the call.

Bishop Guertin scored eight goals in the first quarter and played what its coach labeled a complete game in a 16-4 win over Pinkerton in a Division I contest.

"We played a complete game," Cameron said. "It was a different team on Tuesday, I can’t even explain it. It could be any of those factors. Pinkerton is so engrained in us, they are always going to get our best shot. A lot of these kids know the rivalry. We made saves, we won faceoffs, we competed on groundballs, we didn’t turn it over very much."

Those were things the Cardinals (14-2, No. 1 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll) struggled with in an out-of-state loss to Acton-Boxborough on Tuesday. JJ Murphy and Mitchell Lynch combined to win 15 of 20 faceoffs and Bishop Guertin came out firing, chasing Pinkerton goalie Curtis Michaud with six goals in the game's first nine minutes.

Brady Dumont had three goals and an assist and Connor Bouvier had two goals and four assists to lead the Cardinals while Connor Guibord had a goal and three assists and Quinn Cepiel had a goal and two assists. Tim Kiely and Aiden Laurendeau also each scored twice and Murphy had a goal and an assist.

Connor Hughes, Jacob Caron, Daniel Woodford and Micah Dunsmoor also had a goal apiece and Caleb Yeung had an assist. Zach Connerty started in goal and made four saves, while Will Murphy also had four saves and Michael MacDonough recorded a save.

"We were a team that was getting better and better, and we played our best game we’ve played in a while (last) Saturday against La Salle," Cameron said. "Then on Tuesday, I don’t know what the exact answer is, (but) I think we were flat. I challenged them to come, and no matter what, Pinkerton is going to get our best shot.

"We came out flying. It was an angry team that lacked toughness on Tuesday. Usually, the day before a game, I’m going to go with a soft practice, but (Wednesday), we went hard."

Pinkerton (9-6, No. 4) was able to answer early on, as the game was tied 1-1 early and Riley Spellman scored the second of his two goals with 4:38 left in the opening quarter to make it 4-2.

But Spellman left the game later in the frame with an injury and did not return.

"It's not ideal," Pinkerton coach Steve Gaudreau said of the injury to Spellman. "I’d put him up against anybody in the state as a competitor. He’s been a great leader for us and a dominant player for us. Not something you prepare for, to lose a guy like that."

Michael Uber and Liam Prescott also scored for the Astros, while Joey Gallo had an assist. Tyler LeBlanc came on in relief of Michaud and finished with 12 saves once he settled into the game.

The Cardinals were able to push the lead to 11-3 at halftime, but after allowing eight goals in the first quarter, the Astros gave up just eight the rest of the way.

"We had a couple of different options to matchup with them," Gaudreau said. "Get them thinking about it a little bit more. Tyler LeBlanc came in and made saves, so that helps as well. It’s about making plays, and we didn’t make enough.

"They made plays early and they took control in that first quarter, and we didn’t make the plays we needed to. It’s pretty simple. We lost momentum and couldn’t get it back."

That started on faceoffs, where both Murphy and Pinkerton's Cole Frank have been winning around 80-90 percent of their faceoffs this season.

Murphy had a tough time in the first half Tuesday against Acton-Boxborough's Devin German, but bounced back to keep the ball away from Frank, something Pinkerton hasn't had happen much this year.

"We’ve played several top teams in Massachusetts, and Cole, I would say his average, if it’s not over 90 percent, it’s pretty darn close," Gaudreau said. "We knew it was going to be a battle and credit to JJ, he made the plays he needed to. I couldn’t be more comfortable and confident in our faceoff guy. He’s been the heart and soul of our team all year."

Murphy's success helped jump start Bishop Guertin in the first quarter and the Cardinals' offense took it from there.

"Cole Frank is probably running off at 90 percent this season, which is really, really good, but you can see just how good JJ is," Cameron said. "We just had the ball all day long. We’re a very good shooting team and I think we shot their first goalie out of it. Then the second goalie came in and made some saves."
