TYNGSBOROUGH, Mass. - There has been a lot so far this season to throw the Bishop Guertin High School boys hockey team off its routine.

Snow days and midterm exams bunched around two regular-season games before the holiday break have kept the Cardinals from getting into a rhythm off the ice, but they were on just enough Saturday to get a win.

Bishop Guertin scored two power play goals, got four goals from four players, and controlled play for long stretches against Windham to pick up a 4-1 win over the Jaguars in Division I action at Skate 3 in Tyngsborough, Mass.

Declan Wilkie and Mike Schaaf tallied the only goals the Cardinals (1-1) would need just 50 seconds apart late in the first period and Ben Young and Aaron Pratt added a goal each in the second and third periods, respectively.

"It’s been a tough week," Bishop Guertin coach Gary Bishop said. "Our kids have had exams all week long. I thought that was apparent. We didn’t have enough high-energy shifts. We had a couple, like with the (Ben) Young goal. That line was buzzing all over the place. We probably only had about four of those and we need a lot more than that. We rolled four lines and they all contributed somewhat. We’re happy with that."

Derek Amaral added two assists for Bishop Guertin while Max Trawick, Sean Kelley and Mike Kiely had a helper apiece and Chris Sullivan kept Windham (0-2) off the board until the final minutes, when Charlie Breen scored on a breakway.

The Jaguars got 30 saves from freshman goalie Vito Mancini, his second straight game to open the year with over 30 saves.

"The freshman goalie is standing on his head," Windham coach Shawn Dunn said. "He had a lot of saves (Saturday). He’s hiding a lot.

"It’s a slow start. It took until the third period for them to finally find their legs and get going. It’s a young group. I’m not sure what causes the slow start. The warmup was fine, everybody was engaged mentally, and then the puck dropped and we didn’t show up. It’s a young team and it happens sometimes. I think they got a little shellshocked."

Windham struggled to get the puck out of its own end in the first period, but it wasn't until Michael Montanile went off for hooking late in the period that Bishop Guertin was able to break through. Amaral brought the puck into the zone, getting Mancini to commit before sliding it across to Wilkie, who knocked it into the open net.

Schaaf struck 50 seconds later to make it 2-0 with 2:44 to go in the first period to give Bishop Guertin plenty of momentum.

"We know if we’re going to get one, we’re bound to just keep getting more," Young said. "It definitely keeps the momentum going. If we keep getting those shots, it works out."

The Cardinals had another opportunity late in the period, when Montanile was given a five-minute major for boarding, but Windham was able to kill off the penalty.

But with 2:56 left in the second, Young struck from right out in front of the goal to give Bishop Guertin a 3-0 lead.

"I saw the guy reaching, so I toe-dragged to the right and I had a wide-open slot," the senior said. "I tried to get it back to my forehand to get a forehand shot, but I just ripped it backhand."

Montanile went off for another hooking call with 1:02 left in the second, and the Cardinals capitalized just 16 seconds into the third, when a shot by Kiely trickled through Mancini and Pratt knocked it in for a 4-0 lead.

"That goal at the beginning of the third, it was kind of a fluke goal, it rolls next to the goalie and someone is there to tip it in," Bishop said. "That’s a tough one to take.

"Sooner or later (those shots go in). We had probably five right from the slot where it went over the net, hit the goalie, and I thought we had a number of opportunities that we could have finished and we didn’t. The kids have to bear down a little more. They’re starting to feel one another. We’re heading in the right direction."
