NASHUA - When it was all over Saturday at Conway Arena, the Bishop Guertin High School boys hockey team had another win over Nashua South-Pelham.

But while the win counts as much as any others, this one - by a final score of 3-1 - was a little different for the Cardinals.

Bishop Guertin got two goals in the first period and carried play for most of the second, but a Kings' power play goal early in the third made it a much closer game that the Cardinals were finally able to finish with an empty-net goal in the final minute.

"Our kids needed to see a game like this," Bishop Guertin coach Gary Bishop said. "There are 11 new kids who hadn’t played (varsity) until this year. Everyone wants to come out and knock us down when they can, especially Nashua. They’d love to run us out of the building.

"They came at us hard, and give them credit, they had a game plan and they weren’t trying to do anything too special. They locked their defense in tight and stacked them up."

Aaron Pratt gave Bishop Guertin (3-2) a 1-0 lead with 6:27 left in the opening period when his shot from just above the goal line found its way through South-Pelham goalie Nate Serrentino.

Derek Amaral made it a two-goal lead for the Cardinals a little more than four minutes later, while Chris Kiely, Mike Kiely and Avery Abbott each had an assist in the first. Mike Schaff added the empty-net goal with 1:02 to play to finish off the scoring.

South-Pelham got a power play goal from Nolan Foss with 13:20 left in the game, but the Kings (2-3) were just 1 for 4 on the man-advantage, and often times, struggled to even get the puck into the Cardinals' zone.

"Our power play still needs work," South-Pelham coach Shawn Connors said. "Everybody needs to work at something, we need to work on the power play.

"The guys are getting a little bit pressured, and once they get pressured, they start fumbling the puck and slowing the game down. You don’t think straight. We’ve got to work on that with them. I think once we get in there we’re fine, it’s getting there."

After the Kings looked tentative in the first period, Connors reminded his team how they had played in earlier games this season and that he expected them to turn things around.

"We walked in after the first period and gave it to them a little bit," the coach said. "We said ‘you’re better than this team that’s out there.’ We had one goal that shouldn’t have been in. All you have to do the next two periods is hold them and put one goal in, that’s all you’ve got to do. There’s a whole lot of hockey left."

Although South-Pelham wasn't able to break through, it was able to keep Bishop Guertin from extending the lead.

"It could have been (a lot different)," Bishop said. "With all our young kids, we’re still not going into that dirty area. We’re still trying to play perimeter and do things from the outside. We’re taking shots from the side boards.

"We’ve got to get shots on net, crash the net and get rebounds. We had two or three clear shots on the power play that misfired. We’ve got young kids who have to get knocked down and get back up and put the puck in the net."

The goal by Foss gave South-Pelham life, but the Kings took a penalty with 9:42 left, giving Bishop Guertin an opportunity to go back up by two goals. Instead, it was the Kings who almost tied it, as John Pinksten looked like he was going to have a clean shorthanded break.

But the Cardinals' Aidan Wilkie got back quickly and bothered Pinksten just enough to knock the puck away and thwart the effort.

South-Pelham had one final great chance after Abbott was called for a hold, but a shot by Chris Skelley (assist) hit the post.

"We didn’t put the goal in (but) we held them, and maybe they realized we can play against these guys," Connors said.
