GOFFSTOWN - Despite coming out Wednesday night with a lot of intensity, the Bishop Guertin High School boys hockey team didn't have much to show for it at the first intermission.

The Cardinals had carried play for most of the first period, but a bad bounce led to a Bedford goal that tied the game 1-1 after the first 15 minutes.

Bishop Guertin was able to put any disappointment behind it, however, scoring twice in the second period and holding off any threat by the Bulldogs in the third for a 4-1 win in Division I action at Saint Anselm's Sullivan Arena.

"We wanted it," Bishop Guertin senior Patrick Madden said. "We came in for this game and we had our head’s strong. I was feeling it. The boys got me going. We all felt it and played as a team."

Madden finished with two goals and two assists for the Cardinals (4-1) while Mike Schaaf and Avery Abbott each had a goal in the second period to give Bishop Guertin control of the game. Chris Sullivan got the win in goal, coming up with a handful of saves in the third period to keep the Bulldogs (4-2-1) from cutting into the lead.

"He played really well," Bishop Guertin coach Gary Bishop said of Sullivan. "We played well and we controlled the puck. We moved our feet. Middle period we got a little lackluster and stopped moving our feet."

While the Cardinals had trouble staying out of the penalty box, their penalty kill kept Bedford off the board, as the Bulldogs were 0 for 5 with the man advantage.

"Our penalty kill has been working great all year long," Bishop said. "Sean Kelley, Patrick Madden, Aaron Pratt, Ben Young ... we have six different guys who can go out there and kill penalties and they all do a great job."

Owen Roberto had the lone goal for Bedford, scoring with 23.1 seconds left in the first period after a funny bounce left him with the puck in front of an open net. That tied the game and Bedford coach Marty Myers hoped it would give his team some momentum going into the second, but that wasn't the case.

"I think BG was up for this game," Myers said. "They beat us to pucks the entire game. I think the chances were OK in the first period. We were happy to get that late goal and we were hoping to come into the second period with a little more enthusiasm than we did the first period.

"Getting down two goals on a team that is playing the way they’re playing, and unfortunately, we didn’t have it (Wednesday). No matter what we tried, it just didn’t fit."

The Cardinals gave the Bulldogs a chance to keep the momentum going when Kelley was called for an elbowing penalty just 31 seconds into the second period. But Bishop Guertin killed off the power play, and just 21 seconds after it ended, Abbott scored to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.

That's where the score stayed until 2:20 remained in the period, when Schaaf scored on the power play to give Bishop Guertin a 3-1 lead.

Abbott came close to getting another goal early in the third, getting a shorthanded opportunity, but Bedford's Shea Guimont was able to keep the puck out of the net.

The Bulldogs called their timeout with 3:59 to play, and with the faceoff in the Cardinals' end, pulled Guimont for the extra skater. Pratt was called for a trip moments later, giving Bedford a 6-on-4 advantage, but Madden was able to flip the puck the length of the ice for a shorthanded empty-net goal with 2:43 remaining.

"Early in the year, it’s huge," Bishop said of the win. "Somewhere down the road, you’re going to have an off night or a goaltender is going to have a great night and you lose a game you shouldn’t lose. When you win a game like this, it keeps you going in the right direction."
