NASHUA - The Bishop Guertin High School boys basketball team ended the regular season with two of its worst offensive performances of the year.

Now that its tournament season, when it mattered most Wednesday night, the Cardinals turned the offense on from start to finish.

No. 6 Bishop Guertin hit 11 3-pointers, jumped out an early lead, and held No. 11 Manchester Central at a seemingly comfortable distance throughout on the way to an 84-63 win in the Division I preliminary round. The win sends the Cardinals to the quarterfinals, where they will face No. 3 Goffstown at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

"Fortunately, the guys all really played well," Bishop Guertin coach John Fisher said. "That was a really good shooting display and that’s how we’ve been shooting in practice. I’m thankful the guys were able to get those shots and I’m proud of them.

"The guys who shot those are the guys who shoot them. I didn’t consider any of those shots a bad shot, but that’s easy to say when they go in."

Matt Santosuosso led the way for Bishop Guertin (13-6), scoring 20 of his game-high 29 points in the first half, while Luke Anderson added 19 points, including five 3-pointers, and Tyler Mackey was also in double figures with 12 points.

Central (9-10) got 19 points each from William Gearles and Kuel Akot, as Gearles was 9 of 11 at the free throw line and Akot hit three 3s. Baylee Bates and Alex Montanez each finished six points for the Little Green, who gave the Cardinals a scare in a 74-71 Bishop Guertin win on Jan. 26.

"We knew Central was a team that we didn’t want to see," Fisher said. "They’re very, very talented. They might not have shot the ball like they usually do, but last game, they came in here and set the nets on fire. We were going to try to play a little further out on defense."

Bishop Guertin led by eight points at the end of the first quarter and outscored Central 17-8 over the final four minutes of the first half to take a 45-29 lead into halftime. Anderson had two 3s and Mackey another during the run.

"We knew we had to come out and show everyone we just had two off games," Santosuosso said. "We brought the energy, we hit all of our shots, and we’ve just got to keep doing that.

"Everything just felt natural and that’s how we run our offense. It could be anyone (scoring). Our energy was the best we’ve had all year. It kept us going and kept the momentum going."

The run carried over into the second half. After a basket by Akot to open the third quarter, the Cardinals responded with an 11-2 run, getting two 3s from Anderson, one from Santosuosso and putback by Javari Ellison to take a 56-33 lead just 2:06 into the half.

Bishop Guertin led by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter when the teams emptied the benches.

Now the Cardinals will take on Goffstown for the second time a week, as the team's played in the final game of the regular season, which the Grizzlies came back to win 44-41 on Feb. 5\. Bishop Guertin scored just 11 points in the second half of that game.

"We had better decisions," Fisher said of the difference against Central. "We talked about good, not great. In the first half, we shot good shots. We wanted to shoot great shots in the second half. We’ve had some good practices. The chemistry is really starting to click. We have everybody healthy, which is unique this year."
